Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
For shopping fun, head to Ginza or Takeshita Street. Do some cultural sightseeing at Tokyo National Museum and Asakusa. There's lots more to do: admire the landmark architecture of Tokyo Tower, wander the streets of Akihabara, make a trip to Shibuya Crossing, and stop by Odaiba District.

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Start off your visit on the 20th (Mon): take in the exciting artwork at Hakone Craft House, explore the world behind art at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), and finally contemplate the long history of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu. Traveling by car from Tokyo to Hakone-machi takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. While traveling from Tokyo, expect a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Hakone-machi, ranging from highs of 24°C to lows of 22°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 21st (Tue) so you can go by car to Kyoto.

Kyoto

Getting from Hakone-machi to Kyoto by car takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and train; or fly. When traveling from Hakone-machi in September, plan for a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto: temperatures range from 33°C by day to 23°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to Nara.

Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Dotombori District and Kobe Harborland. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Himeji Castle and Osaka Castle. Step out of Osaka to go to Himeji and see Koko-en, which is approximately 1h 40 min away. There's still lots to do: get in on the family fun at Universal Studios Japan, get a taste of the local shopping with Hankyu Umeda Honten, stop by Naniwa Meibutsu Ichibirian Dotombori, and wander the streets of Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street.
