Take a break from the city and head to Butterfly Conservatory and Arenal Natura Ecological Park. Discover out-of-the-way places like Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano) and Los Lagos Hot Springs. When in La Fortuna de San Carlos, make a side trip to see Arenal Eco Zoo in El Castillo, approximately 38 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: take in the natural beauty of Paradise Hot Springs, view the masterpieces at Onirica Art Gallery, head outdoors with Canopy San Luis, and Head underground at Venado Caves.

San Jose to La Fortuna de San Carlos is an approximately 2.5-hour car ride. You can also take a shuttle; or take a bus. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Sun) early enough to travel to Uvita.

Take a break from the city and head to Uvita Beach and Oro Verde Biological Reserve. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and Parque Nacional Marino Bahia Ballena. Step out of Uvita with an excursion to Los Cusingos Neotropical Bird Sanctuary in San Isidro del General--about 1h 05 min away. The adventure continues: take in the dramatic scenery at Santa Lucia Falls, look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas, and look for gifts at Discount Liquor Wine & Cigars.

Step out of the city life by going to Naturalist Michael Araya Flores and Playa Espadilla Norte. Explore hidden gems such as Palo Seco Beach and Playa Bejuco. Step out of Manuel Antonio with an excursion to Los Campesinos Reserve in Quepos--about 1h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: get a dose of the wild on Mulguri Adventure and stop by Jaime Peligro Book & CD Shop.

Traveling by car from Uvita to Manuel Antonio takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In January in Manuel Antonio, expect temperatures between 30°C during the day and 22°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Rincon de La Vieja.

Surfing remains the main reason to take a trip to Tamarindo, as the beachside town is mostly known for its excellent waves.
Escape the urban bustle at Las Baulas National Marine Park and Monkey Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Potrero Beach and Azul Profundo Boutique. Take a break from Tamarindo with a short trip to El Viejo Wetlands in Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, about 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: explore and take pictures at Kingpin Sportfishing.
