Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Get a sense of the local culture at Sensō-ji and Imperial Palace. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hase-dera and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Take a break from Tokyo with a short trip to Kōtoku-in in Kamakura, about 1h 25 min away. The adventure continues: admire the masterpieces at Tokyo National Museum, take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, admire the striking features of Tokyo Tower, and look for gifts at The Tsukiji Market.

Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Wed): take some stellar pictures from Kiyomizu-dera, then steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, and then steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari Taisha. Keep things going the next day: take a stroll through Gion, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji.

Getting from Kanazawa to Kyoto by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive. In August in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 39°C during the day and 29°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel to Ishigaki.

Start off your visit on the 28th (Mon): step off the mainland to explore Kouri Island, tour the pleasant surroundings at Aragusuku Beach, and then kick back and relax at Sunayama Beach. On the 29th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: snap pictures at Irabu Bridge, head off the coast to Irabu-jima Island, then head off the coast to Shimoji-jima Island, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Toguchi no Hama.
