Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cannaregio and San Giorgio Maggiore. Basilica di San Marco and Peggy Guggenheim Collection are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Take a break from Venice with a short trip to Basilica di Sant’Antonio - Basilica del Santo in Padua, about 52 minutes away. There's lots more to do: explore the activities along Canal Grande, admire the landmark architecture of Porta della Carta, step off the mainland to explore Isola di Burano, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Campo del Ghetto.
