Island of the Gods

The main town on the largest of Korea's islands, Jeju, has a volcanic landscape protected by UNESCO. The World Heritage-listed volcanic island includes the country's highest peak, sets of impressive lava tubes and columns, and several crater lakes.

Head to The Islander and Dongmun Marketfor plenty of shopping. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like O’sulloc Tea Museum and Haenyeo Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Seogwipo (Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju Folk Village, &more). There's still lots to do: Head underground at Manjanggul Cave, walk around Hallim Park, make a trip to Mysterious Road (Dokkaebi Road), and get engrossed in the history at Jeju Folklore & Natural Museum.

Busan — 2 nights

The country's second city, Busan has often been referred to as South Korea's summer capital.

Fly from Jeju to Busan in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry and car; or do a combination of ferry, taxi, and train. In May in Busan, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 16°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Thu) early enough to drive to Gyeongju.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Republic of Korea, Gyeongju combines a rich cultural heritage with mountain and coastal scenery.

Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: pause for some photo ops at Seokguram and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Bulguksa Temple.

Getting from Busan to Gyeongju by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a bus; or take a train. Expect little chillier weather when traveling from Busan in May: highs in Gyeongju hover around 18°C, while lows dip to 18°C. Jeonju — 2 nights

If you're a gastronomy enthusiast, you should consider a trip to Jeonju, a city hailed for its cuisine and food festivals.

On the 15th (Sun), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Jeondong Catholic Church, steep yourself in history at Gyeonggijeon Shrine, and then see the interesting displays at Royal Portrait Museum.

Seoul — 4 nights

One of east Asia's major cultural and financial centers, Seoul boasts five World Heritage Sites and a huge selection of museums, temples, shrines, palaces, parks, gardens, and glass-and-steel skyscrapers.

Popular historic sites such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Gate are in your itinerary. Myeongdong Shopping Street and Changdeokgung Palace are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step out of Seoul with an excursion to Nami Island in Chuncheon--about 1h 40 min away. There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Insadong, make a trip to Dongdaemun Gate (Heunginjimun), get engrossed in the history at National Museum of Korea, and explore the activities along Cheonggyecheon Stream.

A popular vacation island for Koreans and foreigners with a mild coastal climate, Jeju-do offers hiking, caving, horseback riding, and plenty of beaches on which to relax and observe the sunset. A holiday in Jeju-do usually involves a visit to a UNESCO-protected lava tube, where you can see the world’s largest known lava column. Other lava and limestone caves set in botanical gardens, as well as a number of folk villages, combine to offer a diverse range of attractions during treks through the densely forested island, with the well-marked hiking trails also leading past giant basalt statues. Inland theme parks--ranging from a teddy bear museum to an erotic sculpture park--and golf courses provide a diverse range of entertainment options. The matriarchal island is known for its fisherwomen and female divers.
