Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, remains the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the New World.Start off your visit on the 17th (Sun): don't miss a visit to Zona Colonial and then pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. Although out of fashion in the past decades, major revitalization efforts have made a trip to Puerto Plata a growingly popular option for the adventurous travelers.Step out of Puerto Plata with an excursion to Paradise Island & The Mangroves (Cayo Arena) in Punta Rucia--about 2h 15 min away. There's much more to do: take in the dramatic scenery at 27 Charcos, ride a horse along Rancho Lorilar, take in the awesome beauty at Pico Isabel de Torres, and kick back and relax at Golden Beach (Playa Dorada).
