Set against the backdrop of the imposing Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna de San Carlos offers visitors a chance to explore diverse natural landscapes and sample some delicious local produce.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Butterfly Conservatory and Arenal Natura Ecological Park. Visiting River Rafting & Tubing and Tabacon Hot Springs will get you outdoors. The rainforest meets the sea at Manuel Antonio National Park, a small but scenic natural preserve on the west coast of Costa Rica.
On the 26th (Sat), enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Biesanz and then enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Manuel Antonio. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 27th (Sun): relax and rejuvenate at some of the top local wellness centers and then get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour.

You can do a combination of taxi and flight from La Fortuna de San Carlos to Manuel Antonio in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a shuttle. In May in Manuel Antonio, expect temperatures between 81°F during the day and 68°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Sun) to allow enough time to drive to Uvita.

On the 30th (Wed), take in the exciting artwork at Arte Jaguar Gallery and then identify plant and animal life at Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. Keep things going the next day: meet the residents at The Bat Jungle, then identify plant and animal life at Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena, and then whizz through the canopy at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks.

Surfing remains the main reason to take a trip to Tamarindo, as the beachside town is mostly known for its excellent waves.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Adrenaline & Extreme Tours and Pura Aventura. Visiting Fishing Charters & Tours and Tamarindo Beach will get you outdoors. There's more to do: soothe aching muscles at some of the top local wellness centers and look for gifts at Papaya Con Leche.
