The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Get a sense of the local culture at Scuba & Snorkeling and Caribe Jewelry and Emerald Museum. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Iglesia de la Trinidad and La Popa Monastery. There's much more to do: make a trip to San Felipe de Barajas Castle, contemplate the long history of Plaza Santo Domingo, take in the spiritual surroundings of Convento La Popa de la Galera, and soothe aching muscles at Volcan de Lodo El Totumo (Mud Volcano).

Nestled between rising hills in a narrow valley, Medellin serves as an energetic melting pot of people from all socio-economic classes.
On the 15th (Sat), get engrossed in the history at Museo de Antioquia, pause for some serene contemplation at Templo Parroquial Jesus Nazareno, and then get great views at Cerro Nutibara. On your second day here, let little ones run wild at Parque Lleras, then examine the collection at El Castillo Museo y Jardines, and then identify plant and animal life at Cerro El Volador.

Bogota

Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
Appreciate the collections at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) and Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Laguna de Guatavita and Jardin Botanico de Bogota Jose Celestino Mutis. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Bogota: Zipaquira (Catedral Diocesana & Catedral de Sal). And it doesn't end there: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Monserrate, take an in-depth tour of Casa Museo Quinta de Bolivar, wander the streets of Barrio La Candelaria, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia de San Francisco.
