One of the largest and oldest cities in Central Asia, Tashkent combines layers of history and a bustling modern edge.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Teleshayakh Mosque and Railway Museum. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Minor Mosque and Holy Assumption Cathedral. There's still lots to do: stroll through Chimgon, examine the collection at Museum of Communication History, take an in-depth tour of Amir Timur Museum, and admire the striking features of Khamid Alimdjan.

Traveling by flight from Tashkent to Khiva takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. In December, plan for daily highs up to 5°C, and evening lows to -4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 25th (Wed) early enough to travel to Samarkand.

Uzbekistan’s most glorious city, Samarkand, offers a fine combination of history and modern urban life.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Sher Dor Madrasah and Madrasa Ulugh Beg, Madrasa Tilla Kari, Madrasa Sher Dor. Shah-i-Zinda and Afrasiab will appeal to history buffs. Go for a jaunt from Samarkand to Shahrisabz to see Dorut Tilovat about 1h 30 min away. You can fly from Khiva to Samarkand in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. Traveling from Khiva in December, expect nights in Samarkand to be about the same, around -1°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 10°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Sat) so you can travel to Bukhara.
