Capital city of the eponymous state, Oaxaca relies heavily on its colonial charm, its core a maze of tree-shaded alleys flanked by photogenic mansions, government buildings, and old churches.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles and Mercado 20 de Noviembre. Discover out-of-the-way places like Pueblos Mancomunados and Amate Books. Go for a jaunt from Oaxaca to Santa Maria del Tule to see Santa Maria de la Asuncion about 30 minutes away. There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, admire the striking features of Basilica de la Soledad, examine the collection at Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca, A.C., and contemplate the long history of Monte Alban.
