The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Take a break from the city and head to Tidal Basin and Scott's Run Nature Preserve. Your inner history buff will appreciate Washington National Cathedral and Georgetown University. Step out of Washington DC to go to Columbia and see Robinson Nature Center, which is approximately 44 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: see the interesting displays at National Air and Space Museum, steep yourself in history at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, stroll the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, and get to know the fascinating history of Tomb of the Unknowns.

Kick off your visit on the 9th (Mon): admire the masterpieces at The Art Institute of Chicago, stroll through Lincoln Park Zoo, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Millennium Park. On the next day, pause for some photo ops at Cloud Gate, examine the collection at Swedish American Museum, and then identify plant and animal life at Three Oaks Recreation Area.
