Auckland to Christchurch is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and ferry; or do a combination of train and ferry. Traveling from Auckland in May, Christchurch is much colder at night with lows of 5°C. On the 1st (Sat), you're off to Christchurch.

Get out of town with these interesting Christchurch side-trips: Akaroa (The Giants House & Dolphin & Whale Watching), Ashburton Aviation Museum (in Ashburton) and Geraldine Observatory (in Geraldine). On the 1st (Sat), spend the day riding on TranzAlpine Train. Enjoy Christchurch some more: see the interesting displays at International Antarctic Centre, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Cardboard Cathedral, get to know the resident critters at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, and make a trip to 185 Empty White Chairs - Earthquake Memorial.
