Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil — 2 nights

Best known for its discovery of the first five skeletons of Cro-Magnons, the earliest known examples of Homo sapiens sapiens, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil is home to the rock shelter that held skeletons included a fetus, and remarkably modern looking skulls with a much rounder shape than the earlier Neanderthal.
Chateau des Milandes and Roc de Cazelle are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to The Maison Forte de Reignac and Le Gouffre de Proumeyssac. There's much more to do: explore the fascinating underground world of Grotte du Grand Roc, step into the grandiose world of Chateau de Beynac, steep yourself in history at Chateau de Commarque, and take in the dramatic natural features at Les Grottes de Maxange.

For a daily dose of excitement, medieval jousting tournaments are held twice per day between the two walls--while this may sound like a typical touristy show, it's actually an entertaining display of combative competition and horsemanship.
Start off your visit on the 8th (Mon): step into the grandiose world of Chateau Comtal, then steep yourself in history at Cathar Castles, and then stop by Cité de Carcassonne. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 9th (Tue): pause for some serene contemplation at Eglise Saint-Nazaire, then take an in-depth tour of Musee De L'ecole, and then step into the grandiose world of Rennes le chateau.
