Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Get in touch with nature at Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Kids will appreciate attractions like Huka Falls Walkway and Waimangu Volcanic Valley. When in Rotorua, make a side trip to see Adrenaline & Extreme Tours in Taupo, approximately Taupo away. There's lots more to do: kick your exploration up a notch at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks, trot along with a tour on horseback, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Rainbow Springs Nature Park.

You can drive from Napier to Rotorua in 2.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. In December, daytime highs in Rotorua are 25°C, while nighttime lows are 17°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Mon) so you can catch the flight to Paihia.

The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Start off your visit on the 28th (Tue): get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour.
