Overlooking the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point of the English Channel, Calais is a major port for ferry traffic between France and England as the closest French town to Dover.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to The Burghers of Calais and Plage de Malo-les-Bains. Venture out of the city with trips to Blockhaus d'Eperlecques (in Eperlecques), Cap Gris Nez (in Audinghen) and Saint-Omer Cathedral (in Saint-Omer).
