Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain

#Nature / Park, #Must See
When in Port of Spain, head to Queen's Park Savannah for some rest or recreation. The vast 110 hectares (260 acres) originally served as a sugar estate; later purchased as public land, it became a park by the mid 19th century. You may barely notice, but around it circles the world's largest traffic roundabout. The wide swath of low grass sits in the city's most affluent neighborhood, surrounded by notable buildings. Have a picnic, people-watch, or join the crowd of locals who gather there to stroll, jog, hang out with family, or snack on some street food. • Lovely place for festivities and outdoor activities.... only thing, the pavements can do with some work on them  more »
  • We spent a morning wandering around the center of Trinidad, saw we had established for the visit of Trinidad 3 days before going to Tobago. Nice Center buildings partly kept well, partly under renovation? Surely with the parades of Carnival the whole area would hire another charm!

  • I walked around the park in the afternoon. I thought: lets take a walk around the park. And then I discovered it's huge. From the beginning of January on they start to build everything for Carnival. T...  more »

  • I attended the Army Fete. This open air event was expected to have 15k in attendance being the last of the "people's fetes". The entrances were large if far apart and patrons moved through security quickly. The "special reserve " section had its own bar, food stations and Andy loos which remained stocked and clean. The grounds were surprisingly dry despite earlier rains. Billed as the "safest fete in carnival " it did not disappoint. People and property were secure without an overwhelming police/security presence. Officers to aid direct traffic at the end would have been welcomed. The Savannah as a venue held up to the many, many performers and large but manageable crowd.
  • It's a big open fields that is open to all. During Easter there is the annual kite competition. The steel bands play during Carnival. The Botanical Gardens are located here and the Emperor Valley Zoo is near in proximity. Many building surround the Savannah. Queen's Royal College is situated near as well.
  • Whether you're going to play, exercise or just have a picnic this is a great place with enough space for everyone. There are also a number of nearby attractions like the Botanical Gds, Memorial Park, Emperor Valley Zoo and National Academy for the Performing Arts, just to name a few. Also, it's actually recorded as the largest roundabout in the world. The only issue in some parts is a lack of parking.
  • Nice big Savannah, world's largest roundabout. Great for walking, hosts the best show on earth every Carnival season. Vendors on all sides, restaurants and views of the northern range, old Victorian era houses. Nice place to drive around.
  • I grew up in the Savannah playing soccer and cricket. The scenic Hollows of local trees and vegitation is in the North-Western part of the Savannah. The Botanic Gardens are also near by. The Zoo is not far away but outside of the Savannah. To the Hilton Hotel, sometimes referred to the up-side-down hotel is walking distance to the right of the Hollows. The communities of St Ann's, Cascade and Belmont are also within walking distance. If one feels like taking a hike, Mount Hololo is also within walking distance but the meandering inclines and declines will challenge you endurance. Generally, this area of Port of Spain is very attractive and interesting to all locals and visitors. Try it , you may like it.
