Zaanse Schans, Zaandam
Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
At Zaanse Schans, tour a recreated historical Dutch village filled with wooden houses and iconic windmills. An important stop along the European Route of Industrial Heritage, this open-air museum hosts 900,000 tourists every year. Its 35 wooden homes were brought from surrounding villages to the museum in the 1970s. The well-preserved windmills, which have become a symbol of the Netherlands, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and each have their own distinct names. Walk through the buildings, stop into the shops and restaurants, take a scenic boat ride, or watch traditional Dutch craft-making during your visit. Absolutely fascinating place. Planned 2 hours for it and spent about 5. And still: it was not enough. It was so nice and captivating I was even able to ignore rude & loud tourists. You must get the €15 all incusive tickets: it is worth it!
Lovely place with historical wind mills and all of them can be accessed inside. each one of them has different feature about them as it was many years ago. Fantastic for family trips and stunning views.

Great place to take family, especially kids. If you can get over the fact it's a complete tourist trap, you'll have a great time!
Zaanse Schanz is one of the best displays of old Netherlands life incl. windmills producing cacao, cinnamon and paint, cheese makers, and so on. Free to visit, but there are many things and workshops you can pay for.
