Zaanse Schans, Zaandam
(4.4/5 based on 3,800+ reviews on the web)
At Zaanse Schans, tour a recreated historical Dutch village filled with wooden houses and iconic windmills. An important stop along the European Route of Industrial Heritage, this open-air museum hosts 900,000 tourists every year. Its 35 wooden homes were brought from surrounding villages to the museum in the 1970s. The well-preserved windmills, which have become a symbol of the Netherlands, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and each have their own distinct names. Walk through the buildings, stop into the shops and restaurants, take a scenic boat ride, or watch traditional Dutch craft-making during your visit. • We visited Zaanse Schans while staying in Amsterdam for 3 days. It is very easy to get to via the train or bus. Just note that the 3 day travel ticket does not work on the buses or trains to and from ...  more »
  • Lovely place, typical of the Netherlands, where are preserved some of the old Dutch windmills, with houses typical and charming streets. Beautiful landscape. There are good connections from the Central Station of Amsterdam, by train or by bus.

  • A beautiful exhibition of the history of the zaans region and its heritage. Very interesting and put out very profoundly. You learn here about the economic development of the area and the different Dutch companies which became icon in the Dutch economy. There are also houses and the windmills open to visit. Highly recommended.
  • Where: Zaans Schans Windmills, Netherlands What: A tour of the old style windmills How was it: It's really great they can keep this history alive. We really enjoyed the village and walking around. Sadly we were with a tour bus for the day so we were timed. They did leave us x amount of time to roam as we liked. You can spend the whole morning or afternoon here if you like. The views are peaceful and make you travel in a different time. We love it and glad we could experience it. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5 Recommend: Yes, you have to visit this place when you're in Amsterdam.
  • I loved it. As much as i want to have a longer time here, but i have limited time. So i prefer to the mills around the museum. Expect to see some history of cookies etc. The minor part is you have to pay for getting in.
  • Great museum of the Zaan's area history with old houses and mills and lots of wildlife swimming and flying around. The museum shows all the production history of this region and includes 3 lines of the famous Varcade factory: buiscuetts, chocolate and resins. You can play, taste (one piece) and buy the chocolates at the visitor's store.
  • Beautiful place in Zaanse schans. Amazing experience.
