(4.4/5 based on 4,000+ reviews on the web)
At Zaanse Schans, tour a recreated historical Dutch village filled with wooden houses and iconic windmills. An important stop along the European Route of Industrial Heritage, this open-air museum hosts 900,000 tourists every year. Its 35 wooden homes were brought from surrounding villages to the museum in the 1970s. The well-preserved windmills, which have become a symbol of the Netherlands, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and each have their own distinct names. Walk through the buildings, stop into the shops and restaurants, take a scenic boat ride, or watch traditional Dutch craft-making during your visit. • I wanted my life to go to Zaanse Schans said he was a magical place, and they were wrong! We arrive at central station at 11 o'clock! There are lots of yellow machines where you do the tickets but there can select the language so we go at the counter! The very nice guy has advised us to go by train but taking the bus! We trust and we did super well! The bus costs 10 € return trip and leaves every 15 minutes! The journey takes 40 minutes but gets straight to the village! Zaanse is pure magic! There are 7 Mills some still active! We visited one costs 4 €! Another had been turned into a typical souvenir shop! There is also a shop/factory in the village of cheeses of all types you can taste and buy and also a shop/Dutch shoe factory! To visit absolutely! We spent 4 hours lost them in green and animals! At lunch time we are in town we found an oven where to buy warm bread stuffed and sweets! We drank hot chocolate prepared by ourselves at one of the mills and potatoes with melted cheese! Everything magical! When we decided to return to the city we went to the bus stop where hours from there had to leave and we waited for (maximum 10 minutes)!

  • Well worth the via bus bus tour that included a visit to Zaance Schan. The process of making the clogs was quick and interesting to observe. True authentic windmills are a must, but most of all I enjo...  more »
  • One of the best tour I have ever had. If you go visit Amsterdam you can't miss a trip to Zaanse Schans. Don't get hooked up by hotels' voucher or organized trip. Buy a train ticket for 12 euros/person...  more »

  • A beautiful exhibition of the history of the zaans region and its heritage. Very interesting and put out very profoundly. You learn here about the economic development of the area and the different Dutch companies which became icon in the Dutch economy. There are also houses and the windmills open to visit. Highly recommended.
  • Where: Zaans Schans Windmills, Netherlands What: A tour of the old style windmills How was it: It's really great they can keep this history alive. We really enjoyed the village and walking around. Sadly we were with a tour bus for the day so we were timed. They did leave us x amount of time to roam as we liked. You can spend the whole morning or afternoon here if you like. The views are peaceful and make you travel in a different time. We love it and glad we could experience it. Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5 Recommend: Yes, you have to visit this place when you're in Amsterdam.
  • I loved it. As much as i want to have a longer time here, but i have limited time. So i prefer to the mills around the museum. Expect to see some history of cookies etc. The minor part is you have to pay for getting in.
  • Great museum of the Zaan's area history with old houses and mills and lots of wildlife swimming and flying around. The museum shows all the production history of this region and includes 3 lines of the famous Varcade factory: buiscuetts, chocolate and resins. You can play, taste (one piece) and buy the chocolates at the visitor's store.
  • Beautiful place in Zaanse schans. Amazing experience.
