Molen De Kat, Zaandam

Landmark · Tourist Spot
De Kat is the only remaining working windmill in the world which makes paint. The mill is in the Zaanse Schans, Zaanstad.
The original mill 'De Kat' was built in 1646 as an oil mill. In 1782 the mill was destroyed by fire but the mill was rapidly rebuilt again. The mill was in use until 1904 and then was partially demolished.
In 1960 the eight-sided paint mill 'De Duinjager' was removed from its former position owing to urban development and placed on top of the old storehouse of 'De Kat'. The mill is again grinding raw materials such as chalk to make pigments for paints in the traditional way. The mill is owned by the Vereniging De Zaansche Molen.

  • We ended up in this windmill during a stormy day so it was mostly for ourselves. The structure remains almost as its origins and it's very interesting to see. If you are curious about mechanisms...  more »
  • De Kat - The only working paint and dye mill in the whole entire world. It is amazing. You can see the paint and dye being made and explore the levels of the windmill and see the moving machinery. When me and my family came, we bought a combo ticket for the windmill. It is about €5 admission for adults and €2 admission for under 17 s. Photos can be taken. The paint and dye produced can be bought from the shop as well as other items. There is a balcony where there are amazing views. I am amazed and satisfied with this visit and recommend going. It is also free with the iamsterdam card
  • Visit a piece of art history. Fascinating to experience the birth of the reds, blues and yellows that have shaped European Art over the years. A great, working mill with an interesting story. Definitely worth a visit.
  • It’s a fun place to go and see the windmills however there are the same types of windmills all over the country side. It’s a tourist hotspot and is ideal if you want to pay to go inside the mills and buy souvenirs.
  • Great place to spend half a day with your family friends! Make sure that the weather is sunny and windy to see the windmills at their best!
  • More or less every mill has an entry fee. We have choosen this mill coz of its beautiful view if u would climb upstairs. Brochure was very useful to understand what was produced in the mill and how it was produced.
