  • This museum puts you thinking that a prison more than deprivation of liberty. If you are here then you see how it has gone through the years. You can also click the "place" of the judge (fictional) take a seat and give your judgment about the penalties. The Red-tiled route is highly recommended, this was the most notorious convict prison of Netherlands. The worst criminals were moved here to their behavior. The regime tolerated no contradiction, the prisoners were being educated and after max 4 weeks they could return to their "own" prison. This prison was notorious among the prisoners, here nothing was tolerated and the prisoners were subject to a very strict regime. Known captured, that have been sitting here include master cracker Aage Meinesz, Ferdi Elsas (abductor and murderer of Gerrit Jan Heijn) and Willem Holleeder.

  • Nice combination of museum, tour with the boevenbus by veenhuizen (half an hour) and visit with a guide to the former prison red-tiled (also half an hour). In the museum a lot of information with image and sound. A visit to the restaurant is also recommended. You can there delicious and affordable lunch (soups are home made).

  • This museum offers you the chance to be a prison or a custodial car from inside. The rooms on the history of veenhuizen and the development of the imprisonment with many showcases and nice details furnished. For children there is a really fun scavenger hunt through the museum.

  • Well documented and presented, although in Dutch only. Unless you are interested in history of Veenhuizen and prisons, it's not recommended. There's an English brochure/guide but it's so-so.
  • Nice museum located in an old prison. The building is surrounded by nature and some nice villages. The nicest part was the optional visit to the 2e prison building that was used until a few years ago.
  • The exhibition gives a fair overview of the Dutch prison system. Telling about veenhuizen itself I found personally what too skinny. What was this place and why and was the approach successful? It remains what underexposed.
