Rietveld Schröder House, Utrecht

Architectural Building Tourist Spot
The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was built in 1924 by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld for Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schräder and her three children. She commissioned the house to be designed preferably without walls. Rietveld worked side by side with Schröder-Schräder to create the house. He sketched the first possible design for the building; Schröder-Schrader was not pleased. She envisioned a house that was free from association and could create a connection between the inside and outside. The house is one of the best known examples of De Stijl-architecture and arguably the only true De Stijl building. Mrs. Schröder lived in the house until her death in 1985. The house was restored by Bertus Mulder and now is a museum open for visits, run by the Centraal Museum. It is a listed monument since 1976 and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

  • A. Although it is not visited (except for tickets), is mandatory for any student of architecture through there. A jewel the Rietveld House to the era that was built.

  • The House with its sleek design looks boring and modern, but was already inhabited in 1925! Boring, because that is in my taste which design-that is a model for many apartment blocks and flats from the years ' 70 and then-which is also in the tight and even more famous furniture of the architect Rietveld. With his ideas Rietveld was ahead of its time and this unique House is therefore a must for anyone with an interest in architecture. Not only the outside is worth a visit, the thoughtful touches make a brief home visit within within unforgettable.

  • Wonderful how minimalist and functional the Interior looks like. Far ahead for its time. Wonderful to see how your with minimal things can get a lot of variation in Interior. Also huge abstract.

  • I went to architecture school in the 1990s, and we learned about this historic design. It was absolutely amazing to see and experience it in person! It's particularly notable for how modern and innovative it was for the time. It is not big at all, but the design has big ideas! We were fortunate, because there was a special exhibit at the local museum covering the architect as well as this project, So we got advance prep before actually touring the house. I recommend leaving plenty of time to stroll around the neighborhood and to enjoy the exterior views of the house.
  • Rietvild is pure genius. He has managed to translate a painting into brick, wood, steel and concrete! MUST visit!
  • Its a house that made me became more interested in architecture 😁
  • For modernist lovers, this building is a pleasurable visit. It has been described as the "three-dimensional realization of a Mondrian painting." To visit, you have to book a tour in advance. And do not show up late for the tour will begin without you. It was intriguing to see the interior rooms maneuvered into one large open space. The tour guide will show you all the nooks and clever cranies of the house. The interior also features the Rietveld chair.
  • Couldn't go inside. Nice to see
