Rietveld Schroder House, Utrecht

4.6
The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was built in 1924 by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld for Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schräder and her three children. She commissioned the house to be designed preferably without walls. Rietveld worked side by side with Schröder-Schräder to create the house. He sketched the first possible design for the building; Schröder-Schrader was not pleased. She envisioned a house that was free from association and could create a connection between the inside and outside. The house is one of the best known examples of De Stijl-architecture and arguably the only true De Stijl building. Mrs. Schröder lived in the house until her death in 1985. The house was restored by Bertus Mulder and now is a museum open for visits, run by the Centraal Museum. It is a listed monument since 1976 and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

  • Gerrit Rietveld, the style, the Rietveld Chair. Actually such well-known concepts, living near Utrecht and yet never in the Rietveld Schröder House. Thanks to a surprise from my wife and son finally! Full of surprise and admired! The movable walls, the well thought-out Interior, the extraordinary window in the kitchen! Especially when you realize that this in the 1920s built! A must to check out a tour!

  • Once I went was Schroder House was awesome! Application is not difficult because I'd sign up for a tour of the Museum of fine arts, fine English-speaking.

  • Living for years in the Cathedral City and many times along the House come on the way to Amelisweerd. Finally once visited and I found it special! Very tight, thought out and sometimes striking light. For those who of architecture a must see! I myself had there not so much with it.

  • If you like to view different 20th Century architecture and design, this offers a very good sampling. There is a movie about the history of the house. The tours are recorded in several languages. I had ridden my bike by this museum for several months when I was a master's student at Utrecht University. When I finally got to tour the house, I was not disappointed.
  • An amazing house! Build in 1924 and still so modern. It shows what an amazing vision Gerrit Rietveld and Trees Schrőder had.
  • Very fascinating house that I highly recommend visiting while in Utrecht. You need to book the tours online and they get sold out quickly, so I recommend planning ahead if you are only in Utrecht for a day or two. The house is a bit outside the city center, but still easily accessible.
  • I've seen it just from the outside. For architecture enthusiasts, it is a very nice walk to take from Utrecht centre to get there (maybe 20 mins). This small house means a change in the way of thinking house design. If you want to visit you need to book in advance, the only have small groups guided tour. Ticket is 15.5€
  • Unique place, you won't find anything like it. It's nice to look around it but to really experience the thought the Rietveld put into it you will have to take a tour. At no point was I bored, every inch of the house is amazing.
