Rietveld Schröder House, Utrecht

4.6
The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was built in 1924 by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld for Mrs. Truus Schröder-Schräder and her three children. She commissioned the house to be designed preferably without walls. Rietveld worked side by side with Schröder-Schräder to create the house. He sketched the first possible design for the building; Schröder-Schrader was not pleased. She envisioned a house that was free from association and could create a connection between the inside and outside. The house is one of the best known examples of De Stijl-architecture and arguably the only true De Stijl building. Mrs. Schröder lived in the house until her death in 1985. The house was restored by Bertus Mulder and now is a museum open for visits, run by the Centraal Museum. It is a listed monument since 1976 and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

The design of the House even today is very different from the boxes that modern designers design. The interior shape offers a form and function that would very enjoyable to live in today. My only comm...  more »

This House was the purpose of my trip to Utriht, I was dreaming to see him even since its layout at kleila the architect, live it even more beautiful with all the details, garden around as something new. Unfortunately I was not inside because the Museum does not work on Monday, and it is important! Tickets can only be bought online and they need to be booked in advance on the website of the Museum.

I went to architecture school in the 1990s, and we learned about this historic design. It was absolutely amazing to see and experience it in person! It's particularly notable for how modern and innovative it was for the time. It is not big at all, but the design has big ideas! We were fortunate, because there was a special exhibit at the local museum covering the architect as well as this project, So we got advance prep before actually touring the house. I recommend leaving plenty of time to stroll around the neighborhood and to enjoy the exterior views of the house.

Rietvild is pure genius. He has managed to translate a painting into brick, wood, steel and concrete! MUST visit!

For modernist lovers, this building is a pleasurable visit. It has been described as the "three-dimensional realization of a Mondrian painting." To visit, you have to book a tour in advance. And do not show up late for the tour will begin without you. It was intriguing to see the interior rooms maneuvered into one large open space. The tour guide will show you all the nooks and clever cranies of the house. The interior also features the Rietveld chair.
