Trip Planner: Europe / The Netherlands / Utrecht Province / Utrecht / Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum)
Housed in a historical former train station, Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) documents the history of the industry and its development in the Netherlands. Visit the museum and travel through time from the origins of train technology onward through the golden age of rail at the turn of the 20th century to the present (especially relevant given the Netherlands' extensive train network). A number of exhibits display historical train cars in addition to full-scale replicas contained within the grounds of the museum as well as within the halls of the station building itself. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the last steam locomotive to be used in the country, Holland's first electric train, and the recreation of the "The Eagle"--the nation's very first locomotive from 1839. Keep in mind that you can access the museum via an hourly train service from Utrecht's central station. This is located outside of the centre of Utrecht which is easily accessible via a special train to the museum or other public transportation option. I visited this place some time ago - it is closed.... more »
Was not sure that this would particularly interesting but was proved to be wrong. This is a great place to visit and provides entertainment/interest for both young and old. more »
This is a great museum with plenty to see and plenty of space inside and outside. Even if you have no real interest in the railway it is still well worth a visit. more »
I did not finish the entire museum. But, it was fantastic. The atmosphere of the old factory with all kind of different types of trains make this place becomes unique. It is not about the museum itself, but also about all the kids there as well. You can see all the happy, enthusiasm, curious faces, even with adults. It is a perfect place for family, group of friends. You will love it.
I really enjoyed myself here. I'm in my mid twenties and do not consider myself to be within the aim of this museum but I couldn't be more wrong. The place itself is pretty impressive on its own but there are so many fun and interactive displays to enjoy and immerse yourself in. There something for everyone and of every age. I'd say 5 hours here is a good amount of time on a quieter day.
Excellent presentation of railway history and technology in a during location. Great for kids. The collection of rolling stock might not be as big as in Nuremberg or Strasbourg but children especially will have a lot of fun.
Very nice railway museum. Children will love it! Most of the signs on the locomotives and rail cars are in Dutch, but that doesn’t take away from the experience.
Excellent museum for both the train enthusiast and the whole family. Cafe does an excellent, reasonably priced lunch. Guides are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fluently multilingual.
