Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum), Utrecht
Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
Housed in a historical former train station, Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) documents the history of the industry and its development in the Netherlands. Visit the museum and travel through time from the origins of train technology onward through the golden age of rail at the turn of the 20th century to the present (especially relevant given the Netherlands' extensive train network). A number of exhibits display historical train cars in addition to full-scale replicas contained within the grounds of the museum as well as within the halls of the station building itself. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the last steam locomotive to be used in the country, Holland's first electric train, and the recreation of the "The Eagle"--the nation's very first locomotive from 1839. Keep in mind that you can access the museum via an hourly train service from Utrecht's central station. Het blijft mooi om de oude treintjes te zien, en je kan met kids ook nog een mooie treinrit maken in het museum. It remains beautiful to see the old model trains, and you can also make a nice train ride with kids in the museum.show original

This railway museum has a large collection and is a worthwhile visit, but it's not really for rail enthusiasts. It has been modeled after a theme park and is more oriented to families with young child... read more »
Even if your not into trains, this is a nice museum to spend a couple of hours. With kids it's great. Not only there are loads of old trains, but also the 19 th century walkthrough doirama (not sure what else I should call it) is also a nice feature.
I just loved train's a lot .it was so enjoyable time to see all these trains. Gezellig
A big and rich museum about trains and where the com from. Also includes a big collection of old Steam and Electric and Diesel Trains. Best to go with young children or when you are a train enthusiast.

For any train enthusiastics, the Spoorwegmuseum is a great place to visit. It's more a kind of experience with different worlds that show the specific time, than an old museum with technical facts. If you're around and are interested in trains and the history of them – I could really recommend a visit! Though, be prepared with your own lunch, as the restaurant is really expensive and not too good. Voor de Nederlanders: met de Museumjaarkaart nog aantrekkelijker!
What a wonderful and absolutely impressive museum. Immersive and overwhelming would be the best words to describe my first impression. Great for families, great for train enthusiasts, great for people who like special museums. You will not forget this exhibtion ... it has also got it's own train stop and what would earn a sixth star. Must see.
