Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum), Utrecht

(4.3/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Housed in a historical former train station, Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum) documents the history of the industry and its development in the Netherlands. Visit the museum and travel through time from the origins of train technology onward through the golden age of rail at the turn of the 20th century to the present (especially relevant given the Netherlands' extensive train network). A number of exhibits display historical train cars in addition to full-scale replicas contained within the grounds of the museum as well as within the halls of the station building itself. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the last steam locomotive to be used in the country, Holland's first electric train, and the recreation of the "The Eagle"--the nation's very first locomotive from 1839. Keep in mind that you can access the museum via an hourly train service from Utrecht's central station. • Every now and then we celebrate a birthday here. The ideal combination of snack restaurant, play area, model trains and trains, the adventure in the mine and possibly the theater attracts us. With children of all ages (1-100) you can zoekbrengen many hours here.

  • much to do for young children (under 10), games, nice trains. On a rainy day it is a good alternative for outside activities.  more »
  • In advance I doubted whether this would be something for adults, but I'm certainly not disappointed. For all ages it is appealing. Very nice to see so much history and also really nice to be able to do things. Definitely recommended. Tickets are not cheap but we had 2 for the price of one, but still I would also recommend it for full price.

  • A must see! Very well established exhibition of the history of trains in Holland. Lots of attractions for kids and adults A ticket costs 16€ and it's worth every cent :)
  • Very good museum. Well organized, pleasant, relaxing. Perfect with the children!
  • One of the best museum in The Netherlands! You might think that it's only museum with old-unused trains as exhibition, but you got theater and simulation and (sort of) ride instead. I always bring my guest from other town to this place :)
  • Even if your not into trains, this is a nice museum to spend a couple of hours. With kids it's great. Not only there are loads of old trains, but also the 19 th century walkthrough doirama (not sure what else I should call it) is also a nice feature.
  • This is more than just a museum, it's something between a museum and a theme park. Very interesting and fun, not only for children but everyone. A lot of effort was put into this museum and it's totally worth visiting in my opinion.
