Dom Tower, Utrecht

Must see · Observation Deck · Religious Site
Overlooking charming streets on one side and channels on the other, Dom Tower stands 112.5 m (369 ft) tall, offering unparalleled views of the city. This Gothic structure, which dates back to 1382, is the tallest church tower in the country. Once a part of the largest church in the Netherlands, today it stands alone and challenges you to climb its 465 steps to the top. On the way you'll see 14 giant bells, and the tower's two galleries will reward you with views of Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam on clear days. If you wish to have a guided tour, visit the office just below the tower to get information. • Even in current Covid times, you are able to climb the toren - exterior wise it is undergoing renovation. I've been up the tower some years ago and it's worth visiting for the view of the city of...  more »
  • Currently the Dom tower is surrounded by scaffolding, don't be put off, since this gives you the opportunity to go even higher up and be rewarded with walk around the spire.  more »
  • This was an enjoyable tour to the top of the tower. You pass through several different rooms where our guide Evie gave us the background of each room’s original use and how it had changed over time...  more »
  • Very interesting cathedral building. The 14 bells are magnificent.. The guide tour both in Dutch and English! The only con is the incredibly small place in the upper part when climbing to the top of the Dom. Also, the very big number of steps may cause an injury to any person with not a pretty good physique! Overall the experience is better than the price, since the city view from the Dom's top alone is amazing!
  • It took me almost 4 years to finally climb to the top, and now I can say it was definitely worth it. The bells in the top chamber make huge impression, I can't even imagine how they could've been pulled up there. The view over Utrecht maybe not mind-blowing, but in my opinion a must see for someone who's lived there for at least few months. It's a completely new impression to see all the familiar places from a new point of view. Don't miss it if you like the city!
  • Amazing medieval building. The guide was very enthusiastic and gave us the tour in Dutch then in English. It is quite a high tower with a lot of steps so be aware of this (they become a bit more steep at the end of the climb). You are not allowed to take your bags with you but there is access to free lockers. I think it is worth a visit as it is the most famous building of Utrecht.
  • Took the tour and went up 380 stairs stopping in different rooms on the way. Because the tower is closed all the way on the top, they compensate by showing you the bells. The tour tells you a lot of the history and story of the tower and town. I really enjoyed it.
  • Excellent value for a tour that includes the history of the tower and a climb to the top. Not suitable if you can't climb stairs for long periods of time. The tour guides are excellent communicators and offer a great insight into the local area.
