Peace Palace, The Hague

4.4
#4 of 24 in Sightseeing in The Hague
Government Building Tourist Spot
Often a host to policy talks, legal seminars, and other events, Peace Palace serves as the permanent home to the United Nations' International Court of Justice. The ornate building, topped by a tower, represents the culmination of international efforts at the turn of the 20th century to create an international forum to avoid war and conflict. Stop by the visitor center for information about the court and its daily workings or to learn more about the building and grounds themselves. Though not open to the public, you can access the institution by taking a guided tour and exploring the intricately decorated interior, replete with busts of famous figures, domed ceilings, and vaulted hallways. Be sure to check the website to see available tour times. Plan to see Peace Palace and other attractions that appeal to you using our The Hague family vacation planner.

  • Interesting free visit you can do in a small museum in the first part of the Palace (enter from left pedestrian gate) with free audio-guides in different languages. Outside the museum also the tree where everybody could leave a "wish" and the monument with the fire and the stones coming from every country that contributed to the history of the palace (on the right before entering the property).
  • The area near by is great, modern architecture is combined with old one. Actually very impressive and peasfull place. The palace by itself is gorgeous! Definitely should be visited.
  • The historic building has a nice view but should allow visitors more often.
  • This is a beautiful old style palace and it's well worth a visit even if you have to drive an extra hour or two.
  • We went here with my husband's mother and his aunt to the Peace Palace. The building is beautiful and so is the garden around it. Since a couple of years there is also a visitorcenter. You can have an audioguide for free and you can learn about the Peace Palace and internation law. It's very interesting and worth the visit. You'll need about 30 minutes for a nice visit.
