Museum De Gevangenpoort, The Hague
(3.9/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
See life from behind bars at Museum De Gevangenpoort, an 18th-century prison-turned-museum. Since 1882, the former prison has told tales of the crime and punishment that unfolded here over its seven centuries of history. Housing serious criminals, both rich and poor, the prison was known as a place of torture. Walk through the prisoner's cells, the interrogation room, the torture chambers, and the courtroom. Some prisoners were even publicly executed in the square in front of the prison. Note that the cell complex can only be viewed with an official guide, so check the schedule in advance. • Beautifully preserved building. The guide brings you with its wonderful stories in the middle ages. Exciting for the children if the light is turned off. ...

  • This is a good place to spend some hours learning about the history of this area and how prisoners used to live. Some of the things you can see here are quite horrible if you think of how they used th...  more »
  • In addition to the Mauritshuis also visited the prison gate. We have here a tour and our guide was very good. He knew well the stories bring to life and even so real that it seemed as if every now and then you went back in time. The museum is not very large but the stories that come with this museum told that more than good. This museum is very very important for the history of the Netherlands as it is now.

  • This museum is small, but very interesting. The visit included a guided tour, in English, which was surprisingly good: the guide was really funny and very interactive and knew how to get the public's attention.
  • The Gevangenpoort was a prison, it is build in 1370 it was a prison from 1400 until 1828, and since 1882 is it a museum. In this jail where several people tortured and executed, the period that the prison was stuffed was in 1568-1648 the period of the Eightyyear-War against Spain with many Spanish soldiers and conquistadors.
  • Good museum. It should remind us about the dangers of law by torture and rule by mob. Both warnings have become increasingly applicable to our day and age. The same type of people that murdered the De Wit brothers can now be found in football stadiums and at anti immigration demonstrations.
  • Definitely worth a visit if you're into culture like me! The price includes a guided tour. Mine was in Dutch, but I assume they do English speaking tours as well. From the outside you wouldn't expect that this small, but yet beautiful building, has such a cruel history. Although back in the days, people did their best to bring justice in the country by setting up prisons like these. The guide explains everything and shows you the difference of cells, occupied by the lower and the rich class. Very interesting.
  • This is a waste of time if you do not speak any Dutch. We were offered audio guides in English, however the information is not particularly interesting and does not have the personal touch of a tour guide. The staff were not helpful and the guide did not engage with the non-Dutch speakers like ourselves.
