  • Walking around the city, we find this statue, it is huge and very nice. It is next to the Maritime Museum and very close to the Markthal and Kubus dwellings.

  • Its ok, the surrounding area is quite nice
  • Also known as: Zadkine Monument, after the sculptor.
  • Never before, I think, is a monument, a statue of this size and weight, move as many times as the destroyed city of Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967), disclosure: 15 May 1953. It has now been so gently everywhere in Rotterdam. Incomprehensible that such a monument that not just any people figure, but represents the entire history of the city, in which he should get the most beautiful place, the city of Rotterdam. It symbolizes the worst years in history. It is called the destroyed city. The heart of man by artist Zadkine is gone as well as the heart of Rotterdam during the 2nd World War is completely destroyed by the bombardment of the Germans. The monument ' destroyed city ' is a bronze statue of a human figure without a heart. The autographed picture is placed on a pedestal of basalt lava. The image is 6 meters high and three tons in weight. The memorial expresses the confusion of a ravished man. Sculptor Ossip Zadkine has its design as follows: ' a cry of horror to the human monster, that Badger had to come up with in order to let his brothers work atone for a crime committed ', which they didn't. The Memorial was a gift of the Executive Board of the beehive. With this gesture the company wanted the memory of its 737 killed Jewish staff. The monument is finally revealed on May 15, 1953. On 14 May 2007 is the Memorial, after restoration, again revealed by Mayor Ivo Opstelten of Rotterdam. The monument is placed on 1940, Square on the waterfront of the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam.
