  • Herta was a fantastic Guide. History, plants and vogles, but especially the power of water and nature. This should you ever do if your condition allows it! Only with a guide in group.

  • Major landscape of the majestic estuary of the Scheldt, the 'home Land van Saeftinge' (literally "drowned country") is not even mentioned in the Guidebook that distributes its stars. Strange forgetfulness because that part of the territory of the Netherlands is one of the few to not have been (re) reclaimed from the sea. For climate but also political reasons, the sea eventually win back at the end of the 16th century this area of 3000 hectares North of the port of Antwerp, sweeping four villages that no longer appear on the map. The last steeple - and witness - collapsed a long time ago. The nearby village "Nieuw Namen" reminds the oldest engulfed. This "drowned country" gives an idea of what was to be the Zealand before humans built dikes. It is accessible only with an experienced guide because the game of tides is particularly dangerous because of channels very branched, often impassable and the tall grass extract from the view. Furthermore the slimy mud slows down the market. However, this same vase ("slikke" in Dutch) is rich in agencies that each tide offers delight to thousands of birds to observe. A very educational visitor centre explains all this to Emmahaven, where also leave two short routes (a true floor and a "cows") which give a good idea of this place where the horizon is unique, with its movement of ships to Antwerp which seem to move on Earth. Do not miss the tiny port of Paal at the edge of this 'drowned country' and the Scheldt: during the week, you will have trouble imagining that the largest ports in Europe surround you, as well as tens of millions of inhabitants.
