Just a short distance from the bustling, modern center of Amsterdam, you can step into a medieval world at Muiderslot. The castle, which dates to the 14th century, was built to protect the important water trade route to Utrecht. Through the subsequent centuries, it served as a private residence and later a prison. One of the castle's most famous owners was 17th-century poet, historian, and playwright Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. Now a museum, the castle has been restored to its 17th-century atmosphere, with authentic furniture, arms and armor, and examples of everyday life at the time. You can take a guided tour, or visit the castle's website to download a mobile guide app. Using our online itinerary creator, Muiden attractions like Muiderslot can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • It was a bit complicated us arrive since google maps showed us several transfers to arrive. When we finally arrived at the stop, we walked a bit and went through an area where there is a pier where you can take nice photos. When I went there was a competition oar that could be seen from one of the sides of the castle gardens. The entrance to the castle is not cheap. allows you to stroll through the surrounding area, entering the Castle, climb, take a tour, but there was in Spanish, so we do not take it. It has interactive classrooms where it has its history and a few games. It has a cafeteria and a Dungeon with a clamping device. I liked the gardens views. I welcome the visit because he had never visited a castle as well as this, so well preserved.

  • Easy to reach by car or public transport. About 20 minutes from the Centre of Amsterdam. A lot of history. You can enjoy walking around both in and around the Castle. There are free guides that tell all about the lock but also about many other facts and sayings.

  • A little gem near Amsterdam, well worth seeing for the afternoon and a bite to eat in the town afterward to complete a full afternoon. Beautiful clean area, and workers there are extremely polite and ...  more »

  • This is the most interactive castle I've ever been to! I was just expecting a cool old castle to explore, perhaps with some old period furniture. But no - there are video games here! Drop rocks on invading knights! Sit on a mechanical horse and joust with your friends! Dress up in Knight's armor or jester's outfit! Best suited to ages 4-15, but grown ups like myself will also have a great time, especially if you're willing to sneak on the dress up clothes meant for kiddos. Nice cafe. Free lockers. Beautiful garden. Great views. And of course, a million photo opportunities. Worth the $$$.
  • Excellent place for a quiet afternoon. Two of the towers are accessible for visitors. The castle is well preserved and you can learn a lot about the defense strategies during the exposition. You could walk around the castles and see the gardens , the channels and find tables for picnic. The tavern serves snacks , cakes and warm soup. The toilets are clean and tidy. Museum card holders enter for free.
  • Beautiful, well preserved and well maintained castle. Filled with history, it's a joy to visit especially for kids who like knights and all things medieval. Though the castle was mostly used just after that period, it still easily captures imaginations of little ones. For adults it's interesting to find out more about one of the Dutch greats - P.C.Hooft who lived there as the governor of the province. Check out the guided tours for sure, they are great.
  • Great experience! There weren't many people there because it wasn't peak season, which meant the gardens were brown, but no crowds mean easy viewing. The 83 step winding stair case to the top of the west tower is really fun and challenging. I also did the free tour and the guide was nice enough to do it in both Dutch and English instead of handing out papers in English. Takes you back to the days when authors and poets made the big bucks.
  • Im really happy with this trip! Very nice castle in Amsterdam not far from the city centre... We took 1 train from the central station and then change and took 1 bus and we got there in about 40 min for the way back there is 1 bus every 30 min and only 15,50 euros entrance for adults the castle closing at 5 o clock so make sure you get there early!!! This castle is .......a must see! Very nice gardens outside................ Lots of dutch history..... Very helpful staff
