Just a short distance from the bustling, modern center of Amsterdam, you can step into a medieval world at Muiderslot. The castle, which dates to the 14th century, was built to protect the important water trade route to Utrecht. Through the subsequent centuries, it served as a private residence and later a prison. One of the castle's most famous owners was 17th-century poet, historian, and playwright Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. Now a museum, the castle has been restored to its 17th-century atmosphere, with authentic furniture, arms and armor, and examples of everyday life at the time. You can take a guided tour, or visit the castle's website to download a mobile guide app. Using our online itinerary creator, Muiden attractions like Muiderslot can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Tour was good, definitely worth it. You can also visit a piece of the castle itself. Lots of interactive things for young people. Also a beautiful herb garden.

  • I took the ferry to the castle and I think it was great way to go visit it. The ferry owner is VERY friendly and was able to chat with me. As a fellow scuba diver it was interesting to know more about...  read more »
  • The surrounding town is absolutely charming. Definitely worth the drive to get out here. Beautiful water side restaurants and small shops that will leave you wanting to move here!
  • Beautiful castle. Outside the castle there is a very good maintained meadow, a lake around the castle and a garden. Inside the walls of the castle there is the "main square" and there are 3 routes you can take. For one of these routes, you have to apply for but you can do that outside the castle. This is a guided route (on Dutch, but you can get a booklet on other languages) and there are a couple of them during the day. I strongly recommend taking the whole 3 tours. While going on these tours you will also be able to learn a lot and to have fun playing games like jousting, defending the castle or simply while taking pictures in medieval costumes. Definitely worth a visit, take at least 5 hours to properly see everything. The entrance is 13 euro. Bring your own food.
  • Really nice place to take the kids or just walk around with friends and enjoy the castle and gardens. What we liked the most: falconry show! They have falcons and owls and it's you can see them fly, learn about them and actually touch them. If the weather is good, it's bound to be a perfect day.
  • Great attraction to see Dutch history. The castle is kept in very good condition, and while the guided tour is short, it is very informative, taking you to some of the most interesting parts of the castle.
  • Amazing wedding location, a unique experience & the staff was just great!
  • Really nice place to visit. If you think that Amsterdam it not only about coffee shop and girls you have to visit the muiderslot.
