Castle
Just a short distance from the bustling, modern center of Amsterdam, you can step into a medieval world at Muiderslot. The castle, which dates to the 14th century, was built to protect the important water trade route to Utrecht. Through the subsequent centuries, it served as a private residence and later a prison. One of the castle's most famous owners was 17th-century poet, historian, and playwright Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. Now a museum, the castle has been restored to its 17th-century atmosphere, with authentic furniture, arms and armor, and examples of everyday life at the time. You can take a guided tour, or visit the castle's website to download a mobile guide app. Using our online itinerary creator, Muiden attractions like Muiderslot can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Fab bit of medieval nonsense but the kids there loved it. To be fair its pretty well done but it was all rebuilt in the 1920's and without original plans or drawings much of it is guesswork...like Car...  more »

  • It's a beautiful little castle on the banks of Ijmeer. Ideal for day trip from Amsterdam. We took a 30 minute bus ride from Amstel and then we walked for 15 mins. The walk was beautiful with small canals, pretty little houses, and lot of boats. Entrance is a bit expensive it's best to do it with a Museum card
  • Beautiful castle. Outside the castle there is a very good maintained meadow, a lake around the castle and a garden. Inside the walls of the castle there is the "main square" and there are 3 routes you can take. For one of these routes, you have to apply for but you can do that outside the castle. This is a guided route (on Dutch, but you can get a booklet on other languages) and there are a couple of them during the day. I strongly recommend taking the whole 3 tours. While going on these tours you will also be able to learn a lot and to have fun playing games like jousting, defending the castle or simply while taking pictures in medieval costumes. Definitely worth a visit, take at least 5 hours to properly see everything. The entrance is 13 euro. Bring your own food.
  • Now this is what I call a castle! A fantastic place to explore and with lots of fun to be had. You even get to try on knights' helmets. The perfect opportunity for a medieval selfie!
  • Nice and good equipped for kids. Less interesting for adults that have already visited other castles
  • Very nice daytrip for adults and kids. I've been a fan of this castle since I was a small child and have been there many times. This time it was special as it was 20 years ago. Very educational, friendly staff, good accomodation, a very fun place.
