Just a short distance from the bustling, modern center of Amsterdam, you can step into a medieval world at Muiderslot. The castle, which dates to the 14th century, was built to protect the important water trade route to Utrecht. Through the subsequent centuries, it served as a private residence and later a prison. One of the castle's most famous owners was 17th-century poet, historian, and playwright Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. Now a museum, the castle has been restored to its 17th-century atmosphere, with authentic furniture, arms and armor, and examples of everyday life at the time. You can take a guided tour, or visit the castle's website to download a mobile guide app. Using our online itinerary creator, Muiden attractions like Muiderslot can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Lovely experience at this castle on a crisp, windy March morning. We loved touring the interior and exterior of this 13th Century castle. Staff were very friendly, but then that seems to be the Dutch. more »

Really great place to visit. The castle is nicely restored and is an interesting museum. It also has a nice landscape and a garden. Great example of historical fortifications and part of dutch water line. Great place to go to on weekends by bike. Only 18 km from Amsterdam. Free for museum card owners.

Nice spot. We did not have time to go inside but enjoyed relaxing on the grass. We got the chance to find an army car near.

Beautiful gardens and very informative. Well preserved piece of history, with free audio guide. Lots of nooks to be explored. The moat and gardens are so picturesque. Loved the owls! A nice little cafe inside. Really relaxing place to visit. €15.50 adult, free audio guide. Well worth a day trip here.

A real, old style castle which makes you feel like a little boy again, when you read those books about knight and so. You can walk around by yourself. There is a nice garden and a bird of prey demonstration. You can park nearby, but it's paid parking.

Great history. Interesting how small some of the rooms were for the very wealthy. Definitely worthy having a guided tour to capture interesting facts of the past.
