  • Its funny, but in some travel articles I read, its written that this buidling is the second most beautiful buidling in the Netherlands. Dont ask me who occupies the 1st place please as thats also my question. ;-) Anyway, the location is nice. Its surrounden by great cafes and restaurants. You can do some tours as well.
  • Beautiful
  • Officially to the Lange Noordstraat, but any mention of course the market square as a place where the old town hall of Middelburg are destination. The market square is also a fairly large square where the Town Hall at its best, the market (the official name) is further covered by the shops and restaurants with a terrace. Middelburg should be around the middle of the 9th century, as in archaeological excavations of 1940 after the destruction of his utensils from that period found. The name has its origins in the Middle castle on Walcheren. The castle was between the Duin Castle (Domburg) and the South Castle (Souburg). Was there a ringwal burg. That was meant as defense or against the Vikings, or built by the Viking King Harald. Who got in 841 of Emperor lothair I in Walcheren. Most likely possessed Middelburg already in the 13th century a town hall, located on the Long Delft. A fire in 1426 explained this town hall in the ashes, but was rebuilt on the same spot. In 1451 met the mayors all over the building of a new City Hall. The foundation stone was laid on 21 april 1452 for the Town Hall on the market. The construction concerned not only the Town Hall, but also de Vleeshal and cloth Hall. Then there are a number of phases of her-and growing which lasted until 1858. In the period 1881-1918 was the City Hall led by Pierre Cuypers restored. The restoration of the façade in 1912 came ready. Between 1912 and 1918 was the Gothic part of the facade in the Noordstraat. The Sundial in the frame and in the work of de Vleeshal was removed and came after various wanderings in 1995 back on its original place. In the end it was the restoration on August 18, 1950 was ready and the restored Town Hall by Queen Juliana re-commissioned in. In the façade are 25 images that the counts and countesses who have ruled over Zeeland. The colors of the window shutters (yellow, white and red) refer to the original flag of Middelburg. All in all is the old town hall is one of the most beautiful monuments of Netherlands. She also does a bit, little bit but, think of the old town hall of Gouda. In each case a reason to take a look at both of them.

  • What a magnificent City Hall! Tip: save the vleeshal. Little to see except a small art exhibition.
