  • The imposing St. Lambertus Church was the first parish church outside the ancient city walls of Maastricht. The building dates back to 1916, at first glance, it appears the Church older, more monumental and inspired to the famous Sacre Coeur in Paris. The facades are made of Kunrader stone, a hard and rougher variant of Marl. Also inside the Church with beautiful wall and ceiling paintings monumental. So much for the good news. The Church is built on the Casemates, a subterranean network of corridors, which belonged to the ramparts of the old city of Maastricht. Because of this, the Church subsidence and had to after several recovery attempts between the years 30 and 70 of the last century around 1980 finally be closed to the public. The St. Lambert parish was then added to the 500 m away gels St. Anna parish. Demolition of the striking church threatened, until end last century the status ' national monument ' to the building was awarded. This also meant that financial resources available for the strengthening of the foundations and the restoration of the building itself. Currently, the Church used as a Hall for cultural events and partly as a laboratory/research area. Unfortunately, this means that the building no longer is accessible to the public, also my reason to something less than ' excellent '.
