  • Great museum. Fantastic lay out. Excellent for families, kept our boys entertained for 3 hours on a wet miserable day. Excellent value for money.  more »
  • Beautiful building. What an entertaining exhibition with humor. good idea to add contemporary art especially the glass art of Gerd Rohling surprised me.

  • Though we are locals, this is a museum we visit again and again. Great for all things Egyptian, Greek and Roman but other periods too! Often there are special exhibitions also. Just because Leiden is ...  more »

  • This is the best antiquities museum in all of the Netherlands and it houses some spectacular pieces. Especially the Egyptian wing is fascinating with its collections of mummies and ancient statues. Combined with the other departments, including Greek and Roman ones, it provides a coherent and clear picture of the ancient Mediterranean and its remains.
  • I hadn't expected it to be so much. It took me 3 ours to only look at the Nineveh part. Though it was fun and I recommend it.
  • A must see if you would like to know more about the rich history and heritage of the Netherlands. The RMO is a forward thinking place with an extremely important and storied legacy itself. Collection (Dutch archaeology but also Egyptian) is stellar. Add to this its central and beautiful location and you've got all the ingredients for a great day out (or two).
  • The museum has an extensive collection of prehistoric artifacts from the Netherlands, and hence this corner of northern Europe. This give additional perspective for understanding this period in Europe. There is also a range of material from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Look out for the collection of weapons from ancient Iran, the most comprehensive in Europe.
  • Amazing and instructive. I was intrigued by all I saw. I highly recommend attending.

Where to stay in Leiden

A relatively small city with a big student population, Leiden caters to both long- and short-stay visitors making their plans on a limited budget. The historical city center remains the most expensive area, offering rooms in charming old buildings turned into elegant hotels. Just a short walk from this area you can choose from inexpensive lodgings in family-run inns, where cozy rooms come with private parking and free Wi-Fi. For added mobility without the extra cost, look for guesthouses that offer free bikes for use around the city.
