Specialty Museum Museum
Housed in an 18th-century mansion, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden represents an archeological institution with a huge range of historical Dutch items. King William I founded the museum in 1818, which has expanded its collection ever since. Today, it displays artifacts from prehistory up to the late Middle Ages, including Egypt, Rome, and ancient Greece. Take time to appreciate the building itself, as well. • It's a beautiful museum with a neat exhibition on various topics from ancient times. If you've been in other museums, such as those of London, then it is not that impressive, but it's well worth it to visit this museum at least once.

  • Top class museum with a great collection of antiquity. The building is surprisingly set up. The collection is versatile and extensive. The museum is easily accessible for wheelchairs. In short, a hidden top class Museum in the old town of Leiden and well worth a visit.

  • Airy Museum, beautiful high ceilings, well organized (setpoint, optical drive, cafeteria); accepts students and french teachers for reductions. On the ground floor, all over Egypt. very well explained and organized: only default everything is not translated in English. 1st (nice modern elevator well integrated with the rest of the parts), Greek and Roman. Everything is interesting; the staff is nice, friendly. Finally a tea or coffee with cake in the cafeteria, and for a low price.

  • I'm not reviewing the exhibition, which is superb (I'm sure experts in antiquity can do this better than me). The refurbished rooms look lighter and less crowded than before, the cafeteria, toilets, etc also look modern. The only issue is that the collections still show text ONLY in Dutch. The period explanation is bilingual but NOT the description of the items. I wonder why this couldn't be done by now.
  • Based on its permanent collection, I'd say this is the best historical museum in the Netherlands. It's temporary exhibitions are often very good as well.
  • Great collection of old stones. Nice vibe
  • Nice museum but I wouldn't say they have many unique items if you have already been to similar museums.
  • I love the RMO. It's a wonderful archaeological museum with great collections. There's a lot to see, so make sure you have at least 1-2 hours. The renovated Egyptian galleries are beaaautiful!

Where to stay in Leiden

A relatively small city with a big student population, Leiden caters to both long- and short-stay visitors making their plans on a limited budget. The historical city center remains the most expensive area, offering rooms in charming old buildings turned into elegant hotels. Just a short walk from this area you can choose from inexpensive lodgings in family-run inns, where cozy rooms come with private parking and free Wi-Fi. For added mobility without the extra cost, look for guesthouses that offer free bikes for use around the city.
