UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk, Kinderdijk

(4.7/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
Almost everyone associates the Netherlands with windmills--at UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk, you can see a channel lined with 19 of them dating back to 1740. Used for the last time during the World War II, these structures used hydraulics to provide drainage, protecting the area from floods. Although advanced technology is replacing windmills today, you can still admire the beauty of theses majestic structures. • It's winter time and the sight is still lovely. The canal cruiser is closed during winter but canal hopper was open. Hop on and visited 2 mills museums: first one you can go up to the 3rd floor , some...  more »

  • Very impressive & Winter time isn't crowded so you get to experience the windmills more satisfactory. Most employees speak English. For the price of €7.50 per person you get to go inside 2 windmills and see a short film at the visitor center. Parking at site is 5€ but space is limited. Admission is free to walk to the windmills or you can take a ferry(€5each) to the 2 windmills of admission, but walking is much more recommendable. Hope this helps.
  • Cold and windy during our Nov visit but glad we went. Be sure to have a guided tour as one can miss a lot in understand how the Dutch struggled to control the sea from the land for centuries. We were lucky in that the manned windmill was put in operation during our visit. It takes over an hour to prep the tower so that the blades catch the wind just right. Too windy and they won't be unlocked.
  • Very nice scenery with it's many windmills. If your in the area or when visiting Rotterdam it's definitely worth a visit and a nice change from the busy city life. Tip: go with a bicycle.
  • wonderful views of windmills and nature...great to take visitors to but check the waterbus schedule
