Kasteel de Haar, Haarzuilens
(4.2/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Roam the formal gardens of Kasteel de Haar, and then head inside to admire the richly decorated and wood interior. Located just outside Utrecht, this medieval fortress is complete with ramparts, gates, drawbridges, and large gardens. It was fully restored and rebuilt in 1892 after a large donation from the Rothschild family, but previous structures on the land date back to 1391. The inhabitants, the Van Zuylen van Nyevelt family, passed ownership over to the foundation, but still reserve the right to spend one month at the castle per year. View the many pieces on display around the castle, all of which come from the Rothschild collection. Guided tours are available to see the kitchens, greeting rooms, and dining rooms, but are usually only conducted in Dutch. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Haarzuilens holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kasteel de Haar and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The Castle, even though new super, is very beautiful, the surrounding gardens as well. So the visit is very worthwhile. Tip: If you plan to arrive by public transport, if you note that there are 2 buses that arrive near the Castle. One of them just going on every hour. The Other went out every 25 minutes, but only runs on weekends and Wednesdays. Another tip: when you get to the point near the Castle, there is very little signage to find the correct path. The walk is about 10 minutes from the point to the Castle, but very soft. To get off the bus (micro bus), walk towards the bus until the end of the street. Go to your left (the opposite side of the village) and then take a small road to the right, no more than 100 meters of the point.

  • A real fairy tale Castle! I loved this castle in Utrecht with a wonderful environment I visited in autumn and the colors of the gardens were spectacular. The Castle Interior has an interesting history that you can meet in your language because they have individual electronic devices that translate in all languages. It is a must-see because it is one of the most beautiful castles of the Netherlands and you can enjoy a whole morning traveling not only inside the Castle but its beautiful gardens.

  • A must go place if you have few days to spent in the neighborhood of Utrecht, with full family. Travel Tips: 1. If you are with public transport, get down at Vleuten station and get the bus 111, which drops you very close to the castle's main entrance. 2. Pack your food for the day of visit. 3. Best time to visit - I think summer in general. They also have some special events around October. 4. Museum pass is acceptable here and that's the cheapest and best way to experience this gorgeous castle. 4. I gave 4 star just for the reason that they had (at least when I visited last year) Live Guide only in Dutch or else it would have been much more fun.
  • This castle is well worth a detour, better yet be added as a destination on itself. The gardens are beautiful with the castle given an impressive backdrop. To see the interior you need to buy separate tickets but it's well worth it. Try to book a tour with a guide to show you the special places and hear some nice stories.
  • Interesting place. A very modern castle for Dutch rich folks. Now a tourist site. I thought it was worth it.
  • A beautiful castle from the 12th century, which was rebuilt several times. Last renovation was made in the end of the 19th century. There is a guided tour there. Adult = 16€ Child = 10.50€ Parking = 4€
