Kasteel de Haar, Haarzuilens

4.4
Roam the formal gardens of Kasteel de Haar, and then head inside to admire the richly decorated and wood interior. Located just outside Utrecht, this medieval fortress is complete with ramparts, gates, drawbridges, and large gardens. It was fully restored and rebuilt in 1892 after a large donation from the Rothschild family, but previous structures on the land date back to 1391. The inhabitants, the Van Zuylen van Nyevelt family, passed ownership over to the foundation, but still reserve the right to spend one month at the castle per year. View the many pieces on display around the castle, all of which come from the Rothschild collection. Guided tours are available to see the kitchens, greeting rooms, and dining rooms, but are usually only conducted in Dutch. • Just in the middle of the pastures between Utrecht and Woerden, this impressive castle. Jet is really worth to view inside and out. Then have lunch at the Coach House. This summer we're going to be back to the garden view

  • Huge Castle, very colorful gardens can add charm but it is best to visit in the spring. Welcome, visit a bit short for us who had no guide. (It would have been nicer to have an audio guide)

  • We attempted to take public transportation to the castle. We stopped at Vleuten station and planned to take bus 127 to a stop near the castle. Bus 127 is a van that seats 7 people. The first bus was only able to seat two of the 20 or so people who were waiting. The incredibly accommodating Dutch bus station worker got several other vans to take everyone who was waiting. The castle was really cool. Our kids liked seeing the suits of armor. I liked all the copper pots. Really fun. Also we ran the maze with the kids. Going back we just walked to the train station. It was a beautiful 20 minutes back to the station. The walk was very safe on roads with no cars.
  • Castle De Haar is not a castle like any other. First of all it is the largest castle, but it was also only used as a vacation home by its owner to impress important figures from all over the world. The owner hired the best architect out of retirement to do the renovations, and boy did he deliver. The castle is extremely impressive, especially in its details. There are guides in almost every room, all of whom would love to tell you its stories. But I went here on a very windy day, so I didn't get to see the garden. This made it a lot less busy though, so that's a plus again. They also had ongoing renovations in the castle, so we didn't get to see everything, but I think the pros outweigh the cons here. I certainly left very satisfied.
  • The history and architecture are out of this world. What amazed me the most was the friendliness of everybody. People actually look and speak to total strangers on public transport. As Brits know, it's just not done here. Brilliant trip to Holland.
  • Seems unreal walking around. Very clean and quiet little town. Beautiful scenery. This is the real countryside of the Netherlands. Nice to get away from the busy cities and take a peaceful stroll through the castle.
  • We had a beautiful day here! The castle is the main attraction, though there are more things to see. There is a beautiful chapel, a real life labyrinth, a huge wonderful garden to wonder around.. The castle itself is beautiful too. Entering you can watch a short story about it and the family who owned it and then go in and explore the rooms in display. The staff is the best we had seen in any place alike! They are really helpful and and really know the castle and every little detail about it.
