Categories: Specialty Museums, Museums
Inspirock Rating:
4.2/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web
Roam the formal gardens of Kasteel de Haar, and then head inside to admire the richly decorated and wood interior. Located just outside Utrecht, this medieval fortress is complete with ramparts, gates, drawbridges, and large gardens. It was fully restored and rebuilt in 1892 after a large donation from the Rothschild family, but previous structures on the land date back to 1391. The inhabitants, the Van Zuylen van Nyevelt family, passed ownership over to the foundation, but still reserve the right to spend one month at the castle per year. View the many pieces on display around the castle, all of which come from the Rothschild collection. Guided tours are available to see the kitchens, greeting rooms, and dining rooms, but are usually only conducted in Dutch. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Haarzuilens holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kasteel de Haar and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Regularly we cycle along Kasteel De Haar, but never visited. Past sunny weekend we visited only the park or garden. The hair has impressive buildings in a large beautiful garden. The canals along the Castle reflect almost the entire castle with its beautiful towers. You can also make a brisk walk through the beautiful well maintained castle garden, to the Deer Park and even further.

  • I was there for a walk on Sunday, it was very nice. The castel and the gardens are beautiful. Good if you want to escape the city.
  • I absolutely loved the place. Ja steel de Haar looks like it came out directly from a fairy tale. It has been incredibly well preserved throughout the years, and both the interior and exterior of the ...  read more »
  • Very scenic castle with huge garden grounds. Ideal to walk around in the sunshine. The also provide a tour of the castle, which is. sadly, only in Dutch so you might want to get the electronic tour guide. They give out a flyer with some of the mentioned information regarding each of the bedrooms shown. There is also a cafeteria there to have a beverage under the sun.
  • Great castle. 10 mins on train from Utrecht, then you'll need a ride or 30 mins on foot. The castle itself is gourgeous, park is also nice. One of must-see places in the Netherlands.
  • This was a great place to visit! So many things to do and see for little to no money! The castle itself is great to see (even if it was rebuilt fairly recently) and the grounds are spectacular. It was fun to be able to visit a hedge-maze and try to get lost. There are several walking trails and you can just visit and spend all your time walking around. I believe there is also a restaurant on site.
  • Brilliant grounds, but sadly the interior was a little disappointing. We all felt that was hyped up on the website. Still pretty, but small and the tour was quick
  • Amazing experience!!! The castle is very well maintained, garden is absolutely stunning. Entrance to the garden was only 4 euros, definitely the best 4 euros i have ever spent!!
