Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem
Categories: Art Museums, Museums
Housed in the painter's town of Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum represents the largest repository of the famed Dutch artist's works in the world. Spending most of his life in Holland, Hals specialized in leaving his paintings with a "rough" finish. Visit the museum and peruse its collection of more than 750 paintings and works spread out over numerous galleries and exhibitions. Inspect Hals' "loose brushwork" up-close to fully appreciate the sense of life and movement it brought to his art, perhaps his most notable trademark. You can listen to an audio tour, included in your admission, or download the museum's smartphone app for more in-depth information along the way. Don't miss seeing the facility's collection of religious artwork and Haarlem-related artifacts also on display. The historic site adds to the charm of this nice museum. The museum is not too large and has lots of Frans Hals and contemporaries. Special attraction: original dollhouse from, I think, 18th century.

A delightful little museum in pretty Haarlem. This made a nice quick trip out of Amsterdam to try to see a bit more of the Netherlands. Very enjoyable indeed with some interesting art.
An excellent history not only of the man, but of Dutch painting in general. A must-see when in Haarlem.
Take a break from Amsterdam and visit this gem of a museum to see some great art and enjoy Haarlem. Though not as large as some museums, it is in a lovely building and has a great selection of paintings and other art. Highly recommended as a day trip from Amsterdam. Or avoid the crowds and stay in Haarlem and make day trips to Amsterdam using the frequent commuter trains that run between.
Best place in Haarlem to enjoy the great Dutch painters
One of my favorite museums in The Netherlands. This museum has a great entourage and besides the pieces of art there are interesting temporary exhibitions.
