Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem

4.4
#1 of 12 in Museums in Haarlem
Housed in the painter's town of Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum represents the largest repository of the famed Dutch artist's works in the world. Spending most of his life in Holland, Hals specialized in leaving his paintings with a "rough" finish. Visit the museum and peruse its collection of more than 750 paintings and works spread out over numerous galleries and exhibitions. Inspect Hals' "loose brushwork" up-close to fully appreciate the sense of life and movement it brought to his art, perhaps his most notable trademark. You can listen to an audio tour, included in your admission, or download the museum's smartphone app for more in-depth information along the way. Don't miss seeing the facility's collection of religious artwork and Haarlem-related artifacts also on display. • We LOVED the Frans Hals Museum. They recently updated many sections to incorporate the classic art with modern pieces. The juxtaposition opened up new ways to view both styles and was captivating. They also had a do-your-own self portrait exhibit which I enjoyed very much.
  • Delightful, intimate and quirky displays of art that possibly best displays the expressiveness of its human subjects along with comments by the curators of each room and exhibit as well as a number of modern works that derived their inspiration from the Hals pieces and others. Fascinating way to present art and one that more people can relate to, including younger students.
  • Nice museum, but we were with kids from school. They toured us with the class and had special stories for kids. But honestly not enough activity for kids.
