Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem

4.5
#1 of 10 in Museums in Haarlem
Housed in the painter's town of Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum represents the largest repository of the famed Dutch artist's works in the world. Spending most of his life in Holland, Hals specialized in leaving his paintings with a "rough" finish. Visit the museum and peruse its collection of more than 750 paintings and works spread out over numerous galleries and exhibitions. Inspect Hals' "loose brushwork" up-close to fully appreciate the sense of life and movement it brought to his art, perhaps his most notable trademark. You can listen to an audio tour, included in your admission, or download the museum's smartphone app for more in-depth information along the way. Don't miss seeing the facility's collection of religious artwork and Haarlem-related artifacts also on display. • Although old masters not quite my taste are not yet as far as I am concerned you can order quality back for they are anyway high-quality ' Dutch heritage ' towels, nice big also. But luckily there was also some fresh colours (modern so to see;-). Reception is friendly and everyone is helpful. Beautiful matching building with ditto courtyard. Quite a bit a pity that all rooms are darkened and sharp pictures more difficult.

  • I was very disappointed in this museum. It's not that the collection isn't good; it is. But there's precious little work by Frans Hals on display. I had visited this museum many years ago and was very...  more »
  • Visit this museum and you will learn and see the class of this man. Apparently it's so good because it's not perfect yet do you think.

  • Overall a really great museum for those who appreciate dutch art. The audio tour was worth checking out. If you're already in Haarlem take some time for this place.
  • Very interesting museum combining works of Hals and contemporaries in historical context, including the evolving far east Chinese, all presented within a classic venue. Includes not only paintings but also furniture, silver, glass and porcelain, as well as a whimsical exhibit if modern era art humor. Easy to review comfortably in 1 1/2 hours.
  • Super cool museum with beautiful portraits! Not maybe the best museum if you're with kids but they do have a section with dress up stuff. Was able to see a painting be analyzed for authenticity to being a Frans Hals, which was also neat to read about.
  • Amazing artist. Take your time and look carefully at the composition and details of each work.
  • Awesome Frans Hals. Magnificent collection. One of the top Dutch painters

Where to stay in Haarlem

Many visitors to Haarlem choose to stay in the historical town center, which offers easy access to the city's outstanding museums. Centrally located four- and five-star rooms and suites offer all the amenities you need, but they also come at a steep price. For slightly less expensive lodgings, check out the good-value guesthouses and self-catering apartments just minutes from the city's main train station. You can also visit Haarlem from nearby Amsterdam, which offers a greater variety of affordable hotel and hostel rooms.
