#6 of 7 in Museums in Haarlem
De Hallen Haarlem is the name of the exhibition space on the Grote Markt, Haarlem, Netherlands, where modern and contemporary art is on display in alternating presentations. The emphasis is on contemporary photograph and video presentations, with the focus on Man and society. As an organisation, De Hallen falls under the Frans Hals Museum.De Hallen consists of three different buildings, the Vleeshal (Flesher's hall) on the east side and the Verweyhal (named for Kees Verwey) on the west side are two large "halls" sandwiching the small entrance building. All three buildings are National Heritage sites today.De Vleeshal buildingThe Vleeshal was built in the years 1602 to 1605 and was originally a ‘meat hall’ where butchers sold their goods. The heads of bulls and rams on the façades are reminders of the original function of the building. It is an example of Dutch renaissance architecture, with renaissance ornaments being applied on a basic Gothic structure (floor plan and outer walls). The renaissance forms include pilasters, rustica, Tuscan (interior) pillars, scrollwork (above the cellar entrances) and obelisks. Sample prints by Hans Vredeman de Vries from Antwerp provided a source of inspiration for this. De Vleeshal was built by Lieven de Key, the town architect, commissioned by the city government, which judging by the finished building had a substantial treasury at the time. It remained a meat hall all the way into the 19th century.

  • If you are in the Centre of Haarlem are and you love modern art then the Halls. Friendly reception, the entrance fee with Museum card is only €2.50. And I got like any visitor a very nice booklet "101 years laugh at art" with many color photos gift! Super! The museum is fairly modest in size but the attached pictures show that it refreshing and playful.

  • To the permanent collection of the halls is mainly Visual, modern art. Interesting are also the changing exhibition. Twice a year, De Hallen Haarlem as museum of modern and contemporary art exhibits on current developments in the Visual Arts. During the openings of exhibitions meet artists and art lovers together. That makes the halls into a platform for art-loving Haarlem. The annual exhibition in De Hallen Haarlem Summer series highlights themes and individuals from the history of modern art (ca. 1850-present). In 2013 the Halls held an exhibition on the work of the Haarlem writer Godfried Bomans (1913-1971.) In 2017 is the central theme: '' humor in art ''. In collaboration with the Frans Hals Museum. All works are nicely described in the accompanying catalog. When you purchase you will receive also a Quartet game to see the art in both museums still more to discover. A lot of fun to do.

  • Beautiful building but the exhibition 101 years humor in art fell. Or I have no sense of humor or it is not the type of humor that I love. There was little permanent collection. What a pity. That what hung was very beautiful by the way. Nice that you can collect a Quartet for the special exhibition game. You need for a complete game also to the Frans Hals museum, but that turned out to be sure no punishment.

  • Great for a Dutch musea experience, worth a visit
  • Nice place, friendly people and good expositions
  • An unappealing mix of modern art pieces in a mediocre environment. Seems mainly to attract elderly visitors.
  • Went there on Sunday after noon but just found it closed...
  • Great place, i had an awesome time there. I'm writing a report on a painter who lives there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
