Groninger Museum, Groningen

4.2
Housed in three pavilions, each designed by a different architect, Groninger Museum displays modern and contemporary art. The museum opened in 1874, but the current construction wasn't completed until 1994. Take in the distinct pavilions, a silver cylindrical building, a yellow tower, and a blue deconstructivist space. These structures merge seamlessly into one museum located on the canal. Explore the museum to see local, national, and international works of art. If you'd like a more in-depth understanding of the exhibits, choose from one of the several tours offered. • Particular museum! In a part of the museum is currently an exhibit about the Groninger borgen and city elite from centuries past. An exhibition of paintings in the other part of the team, what appealed to me personally more. Back soon for a second visit.

  • While we could only persuade one of the teenagers to join then we had an interesting 3 hours exploring the museum. We especially liked the diversity of the museum with something for everyone, classica...  more »
  • Typical Groningen art of the team. The pronunciation of one of the painters: "this (Groninger) landscape deserves to be painted, I understand as a landscape painter. The simplicity, light slopes, perspective, color, farms, churches. Enough "stuff" to oil paint, diluted with gasoline, to immortalize.

  • This is an art gallery not a museum. The cafe is very busy. The entry fee for an adult is €13. This is expensive. I don't recommend it unless you are very interested in art, especially paintings of rich people who lived in Groningen years ago. You might be interested in large numbers of silver pots here. I didn't enjoy it because I couldn't relate to most of the art on display - it lacked heart. My favourite exhibits were the prehistoric items.
  • It can be good, but make sure you go during an exhibition or you might find some empty walls when it is already a smaller museum. But it is free for students and worth checking out if you are one.
  • Best museum in Groningen. Their collection is very interesting and their temporary exhibitions are definitely worth a visit!
  • Although the architecture is quite hideous, the inner contents can be interesting at times. New expositions come and go with a relatively small interval.
  • Fantastic museum. There is always something interesting to see here. This time I enjoyed the Maarten Baas exhibition "Hide & seek" and the films of Gabriel Lester.
