Housed in three pavilions, each designed by a different architect, Groninger Museum displays modern and contemporary art. The museum opened in 1874, but the current construction wasn't completed until 1994. Take in the distinct pavilions, a silver cylindrical building, a yellow tower, and a blue deconstructivist space. These structures merge seamlessly into one museum located on the canal. Explore the museum to see local, national, and international works of art. If you'd like a more in-depth understanding of the exhibits, choose from one of the several tours offered. This was the most stimulating, interesting, informative and varied museum visit I have experienced in a long time. There are beautiful contemporary objects by Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group, an... more »

I'm totally not a museum visitor, but my colleague all the more! I'm glad I've seen all of this! Very nice, I enjoyed the ' romantic painting ' from the 18th and 19th century!!View original -
Het museum is qua bouw inrichting al de moeite van het bezoeken waard. De tentoonstelling over Romantiek in de schilderkunst was zeer goed opgezet en toonde verrassende schilderijen. Kaartverkoop was ... more »
The museum is in terms of building decoration all worth a visit. The exhibition on Romanticism in painting was very well set up and showed surprising paintings. Ticket sales was well arranged so that there are no long queues emerged in spite of the great interest.View original

It is an awesome museum always with new and exciting exhibitions prices are fair and free for students and the elderly. I saw Rodin who is a french sculptor. The museum boasts an exciting collecting of Chinese and other Asian porcelain ware. I like the hip vibe and adaptation mode

Very nice exhibition on romantic paintings with good explanation. The Cafe invites a break.

The exibitions in the sqaure building vary a lot. Ranging from exibitions about an artist, to exibitions with paintings in a general theme. The top floor of the sqaure building is quite modern as you can see the "bones" of the building. This means that not all art suits it and sometimes it stays empty, but even without any art it's worth walking through if you like architecture. Big sculptures and other big 3d objects are well suited to the top floor so usually that is what is on display there. The stairs to go to the top are a bit hidden, but you can grab a map at the front when you go in and use that to find them. The round building shows the permanent collection, ranging from modern pieces to old silverware on the first floor and a lot of ceramic on the top floor. The floor and walls of the top floor have "cracks" in them to remind you of the clay, shards or craquelé of the ceramic pieces. Soft curtain walls make it feel open, but at the same time cosy. They also dampen the sound and give the room a nice acoustic fibe. So while the art in nice and some expositions are amazing, just the building itself is worth viewing.

Fantastic museum. I really enjoyed the special exhibition on romantic paintings

Groninger Museum focusing mainly on art, paintings and jewelry, and a bit on local artifacts as old bibles and archealogical pieces. The building itself is located in the canal, grachts, between the city centre and the central station. Its a new modern building which replaces the old building in the centre. Big variation, the standard collection is including paintings from: Rubens, Van Gogh, Israels and Mesdag. A lot of paintings reveil an amazing story about Groningen, its wealth, development and its history.
