Old Church, Delft

(500+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Historic Site
Standing for nearly eight centuries, Old Church represents the oldest building in Delft, whose leaning tower is one of the city's major symbols. Located in the old city center, the Gothic church nicknamed "Old John" sits on the site of a much older wooden structure, likely founded around 1050. Approximately 400 of Delft's famous citizens lie entombed inside, including painter Johannes Vermeer and physicist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Other notable features include three pipe organs and a 16th-century bell that produces such powerful vibrations that bell-ringers only sound it for burials of Dutch royal family members and natural disasters. • Interesting spot, few beautiful items, stained glasses and last but not least, a tomb stone of Johanes Vermeer
  • Beautiful church in downtown Delft, the inside is wonderful and the floor is tomb after tomb dating back hundreds of years. The detail in the woodwork is amazing. If you enjoy churches, this is well worth your time.
  • Beautiful church in center of Delft. The building is slanting where you can see from distance
  • You're entry to the new church will also grant you entry to the old church. It has such a rich history and you feel slightly guilty for walking over the gravestones that line the floor. Years of food traffic have smoothed and polished the granite and marble. Each time I've visited the church, there has also been exhibitions of local artists in the premise
  • Delft is a very picturesque old city. A stroll around the city is a must especially during spring or summer.
