Old Church, Delft

(4.1/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Standing for nearly eight centuries, Old Church represents the oldest building in Delft, whose leaning tower is one of the city's major symbols. Located in the old city center, the Gothic church nicknamed "Old John" sits on the site of a much older wooden structure, likely founded around 1050. Approximately 400 of Delft's famous citizens lie entombed inside, including painter Johannes Vermeer and physicist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Other notable features include three pipe organs and a 16th-century bell that produces such powerful vibrations that bell-ringers only sound it for burials of Dutch royal family members and natural disasters. • Wonderful building... I can see it from my window. Nice place to visit, the painter, Johannes Vermeer is burried here. All the statues and the floor are awesome.  more »
  • We visited the old and the new Church on the same afternoon. with the brochure in hand you will learn here all you need to know about this church. Beautiful, definitely worth it (if you can Captivate churches of course).

  • It is the old and small sister of the Nieuwe Kerk. Although it is clearly poorer than this one, the Oude Kerk was the first large church of the city. Something special: see the tower and wonder if it is really well built.

  • You're entry to the new church will also grant you entry to the old church. It has such a rich history and you feel slightly guilty for walking over the gravestones that line the floor. Years of food traffic have smoothed and polished the granite and marble. Each time I've visited the church, there has also been exhibitions of local artists in the premise
  • Probably one of my favorite churches in Europe actually. When the weather is nice it's a very beautiful walk down the canal towards this church primarily because of its 18 (or so) degree tilt. However the church's architecture, while not elaborate, is very distinct and memorable to me. The inside is not as exciting as many other churches but it is very large and, for me, gives a more authentic feel for how people actually attended church in times past (and current in fact).
  • This is a MUST if you came to Delft... you will see it from every point in town.... its lining tower is beautiful..... inside is also well preserved.. I suggest you to buy the ticket to enter to both churches (this one and the new church) a combi ticket
  • It is a very nice church and place to see from the outside and the inside.
  • The oude kerk is famous because of its tower. The tower has a significant angle and is tumbling even more than the tower of Pisa. In the past people of Delft were bullied because of the leaning tower. The inside of the church is beautiful and very typical to a Dutch Gothic church. There are various (remembrance) tombs of well-known Dutch historic figures. Admirals Piet Hein and Maarten Tromp, the inventor of the microscope Anthony van Leeuwenhoek and painter Johannes Vermeer rest in the Oude Kerk. This church is one of the many historic Hotspots in Delft to visit.
