Although Nieuwe Kerk translates to "New Church," this site holds centuries of history. The Protestant church was founded in 1350. In 1584 William the Silent, a Dutch prince, was entombed in a mausoleum inside. This started a tradition of burying Dutch royalty in a private family crypt. The most recent burial was Queen Juliana and her husband Prince Bernhard in 2004. Climb the church tower, the second highest in the country, for views of Delft, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Rotterdam Harbor. Nieuwe Kerk reviews
Visited Nieuwe Kerk in corona times, so we had to book ahead as they had limited numbers significantly. This ended up being a great thing because we (three of us) were the only people going up and... more »
I enjoyed climbing up this tower as i do most. But this one is a little better than most in some ways. Its super small and i would advise not to do it on a busy weekend. The view is great and the..... more »
I have climbed a lot of church towers and do not experience claustrophobia but the climb up Nieuwe Kerk put me on edge! The tower stairs are narrow, slippery, steep and two people can barely pass... more »
The new church on the opposite side of the street. The sarcophagus monument is awesome with marble decoration, arches and nobility emblems. The long stained glass are magnificent and irradiate light through them lighting up the wide spaces across the church. A small souvenir shop leaves you some memorable items to take back home.
Highly recommend climbing up the tower for great views of the city. Try to go early or else you’ll be stopping and starting continuously navigating around people going down while you go up (and the staircase is really narrow and twisty!). Watch your head on the way up as well!
8 euros admission to visit the New Church and its bell tower, as well as the Old Church, absolutely worth it! It is very well preserved and very respectful to their history, it made quite an impression on us. You can climb up the bell tower , it gives you a great view ( it is worth the trouble). It was a wonderful experience in Delft .
If you ever visit this place, don't forget to get upstairs. The view is beautiful. I bet you will be amazed! Also the staff is very polite.
Great historical must see place if you care about history. Very expensive tho. You need to pay to enter a church? Just wanted to go in and pray.. turned out having to pay 41 euro to be able to go up the tower and visit the old and new church. Way toooooo expensive!!!
