Delft Pottery De Delftse Pauw, Delft

Paint a tile or clog at Delft Pottery De Delftse Pauw, offering free guided tours for visitors interested in learning more about a major local art form. This family-owned studio with a shop remains best known for its traditional hand-painted Delftware (a.k.a Delft pottery, recognized by its blue-and-white designs). The multilingual guides can show you every step of the process, but if you prefer a hands-on approach to learning, join a workshop and try painting a tile on your own. Hand-painted items must be glazed and fired, so you'll be able to pick up your own creation in a week--or have it shipped to your home address. • The tour lasted a little more than 5 minutes. It was our short told how the pottery was cast painted and glazed and before we knew it we were in the shop, probably took you so short because we were co-op and after a larger group of us arrived. All in all, not worth it, but it's also free.

  • We showed up on a Sunday morning just to look around and we're treated to a tour of the facility. Nico, the head of the entire operation, personally walked us through the entire process of creating pottery and patiently answered all of our many questions, giving us a very good education on Delftware. At the end of the tour we were able to go into the shop and purchase a few items that were beautifully done. One highlight is that all of the pieces produced here are hand-painted and the shop is family owned and not part of some corporate beast. It really showed in how we were welcomed. If you want to purchase Delftware or are in Delft looking for something to see, this is the place to go. I can't recommend it highly enough. Just awesome!
  • Nice place to visit. Worth it to walk from the city center, because also the surrounding neighborhood is nice. Short, but very clear tour through factory.

Where to stay in Delft

The most popular accommodations in Delft cluster in the historical town center, a compact area heavily booked on the weekends and during the summer. Make your arrangements well ahead if you wish to stay there, or explore the guesthouses near the main train station if you prefer to travel without prior reservations. The city's long- and short-term rental houses, which often cost slightly more than centrally located hotel rooms, offer an affordable alternative for families in need of more space and privacy.
