The Noordermarkt is a square in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The square is lined by cafés and restaurants. Markets are held on the square every Monday. On Saturdays, a popular organic farmer's market is held on the square. On Mondays a market is also held in the adjacent Westerstraat street.Noordermarkt dates back to 1616 and was originally named Prinsenmarkt, after the Prinsengracht canal which the square borders. After completion in 1623 of the Noorderkerk church, which dominates the square, the square came to be known as Noordermarkt. Until 1655 the square served mainly as a graveyard for the church.During World War II, the organisers of the February Strike of 1941, to protest deportations of Jews by the Nazis, held their first public meetings on Noordermarkt square. This is commemorated by a plaque on the south face of the Noorderkerk church.

  • Vegetables, flowers, fish, bread and other mixed knick-knacks. Open Saturdays and well worth a visit. We were there pretty early and several stalls had not opened yet.

  • I regretted not staying to eat at this place, because it had everything an extraordinary look, products of high quality in the midst of a curious market beside a church in the Jordaan district. Second time to get to it, both by chance, and I think that next time not escapes me eat in it. Both on Saturday, I don't know if they put it other days.

  • Since long time out this makes. What is striking is that it is no market with tourist stalls but great local products. Really a market with various organic matters. Delicious

  • Monday morning flee market is great place for your dutch finds to take home as gifts. Check out the cafes all round the market. Just as great to take a break. On Saturday it's a health food market. Have fun !
  • Nice place to have a drink in original Amsterdam environment. Meet Dutch people, if they talk to you. Since usually they like to be under themselves.
  • A local biological market with good quality products:fresh fish, meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables. The perfect place to start discovering the local tastes.
  • Lively large square situated around a big church, with a very typical old-style Amsterdam atmosphere and a great organic farmer's market on saturdays
  • Vegetables, loads of cheese, nice choice of meat, fresh herbs and sauces ready for use (you can bring your jar), freshly made bread (with additions, too), bulk groceries, honey...Love from the first sight
