Noorderkerk, Amsterdam

(2.4/5 based on 30+ reviews on the web)
While on a sightseeing tour of Amsterdam, make sure to stop by Noorderkerk, the city's gem of Protestant architecture. The 17th-century church was designed by the famous architect and sculptor Hendrick de Keyser, who was father of the style known as Amsterdam Renaissance. With its octagonal base, the outer shape in the form of a Greek cross, and unique interior decorations, the church features a design that makes it unlike any other. The church's excellent acoustics make it a frequent concert venue. The full schedule of upcoming performances is available online. Every Sunday, the square in front of the church hosts a farmer's market where you can find an array of homegrown, organic food products. • From an architectural point of view, draw attention especially not on that. It is encouraging that the Church acting, while in the Netherlands massively closed Church and Congregation almost don't want the service. Here it is, and quite large. On Saturday it hosts classical music concerts. Play very good musicians, but the acoustics leave much to be desired. Too high reverberation.

  • If you don't have another thing to do and you spare time you can see the facade, but inside is expensive, poorly run and poorly preserved.
