Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam

4.0
#22 of 74 in Museums in Amsterdam
Housed in Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter, Jewish Historical Museum documents the hardships and journeys of the nation's religious and cultural minority through artifacts, art, and music. Visit the museum, located in a series of former synagogues, and explore its rotating collection of more than 11,000 objects. Look for the themed exhibitions focusing on the customs and traditions of Judaism, as well as their place in Dutch history. Join one of the museum's guided tours, each with a different focus, to gain a more in-depth understanding of specific topics in Dutch-Jewish history. Temporary displays and galleries make up a great deal of the museum's offerings, so be sure to check the website to see which displays are open during your visit. • Rather than standing in line in front of the Anne Frank House, we preferred to immerse ourselves in a Jewish reality still alive, trying to keep alive the memory by retrieving spaces, objects, customs and traditions. With one ticket you can visit four sites: the Portuguese synagogues where, pointing the audioguide on architectural elements and furnishings, you listen to the information about the rites and tales from the live voice of guards in their family history the memory of the deportations. Then there's the historical museum dedicated to Jewish history, with family, artistic testimonies (to underline the work of Jozef Israëls) and costume. Very touching is the Museum of childhood, with the collection of photographs and objects, like the tiny violin, belonged to the children deported and never returned; the cases are kept in an old school, where a group of children managed to escape for good people. And finally the Hollandsche Schouwburg, the theatre "reserved" to the Jews, the only grants them, which remains only the pretty white facade. Instead of the Hall and stage, silent and empty space, and a Memorial. Because it never happens again.

  • Very nice! Bought a ticket and got access to the museum, the synagogue and to the Holocaust memorial and museum :-) the JHM is full of information not only about WW2, but also about everyday life after and other very informative things you should explore yourself. Also very moving stories of people from Amsterdam :-) Downstairs is a gallery of Jewish musicians or musicians with Jewish roots - very interesting! Was definitely worth a visit!
