Herengracht, Amsterdam

Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web
Adorning the picturesque streets of the city and providing river transportation, Herengracht winds past the homes of the rich, showcasing centuries-old houses and quaint cafes. Among all of Amsterdam's canals, this one is the finest and most fashionable. See important and historic sites, such as the mayor's residential quarters and a house where Peter the Great stayed. Snap a photo of the seven bridges of the Reguliersgracht, which--if viewed from a correct angle--give the impression of a tunnel. Look for the oldest residential house in the city--a small 1590 home with a stepped gable, overlooking the water. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Amsterdam holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Herengracht and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Rent a boat or take a cruise through one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam. Grab a piece of Keizersgracht: very worthwhile

  • Along with the rest of the Amsterdam canals, it is worth visiting Herengracht. It is a beautiful canal that represents the traditional Dutch architecture.
  • Stayed just a block off Herengracht for 8 days, and found it to be relatively quiet in most areas. Allowed us to circumnavigate the busy streets when we wanted to just walk, and look at houses.
  • We disregarded the negative reviews because the menu looked good and lots of people were sitting outside. Plus we both work in the industry and know to take online reviews with a grain of salt. We were intentionally made to feel unwelcome. The worst restaurant service I've received (even with adjusted expectations).
  • Great food, slow and extremely rude service. Got an extremely arrogant waiter who had managed not to speak a single word. Even look when leaving. I nodded and said goodbye. Nothing. Walked on and opened the door to leave, tried again to say goodbye. Nothing. Not even a nod. Just a look that could kill. I went back to my table to reclaim the tip I left and tried a third time, still nothing... It's a shame, otherwise we had good food.
  • Good food, slow service. Don't be in a hurry here. Nice atmosphere.
  • Secret back yard that not many know about, but the locals love.
  • Terrible experience! I've been there a few times because friends wanted to. Its' location is nice, especially in summer. However the service is the worst I've seen (even with Amsterdam standards). Rude staff. I was there with a friend and had some beers, and when we asked if it's possible to pay separately by PIN card, we got a rude "no"! That happened a 2nd time as well!
