Herengracht, Amsterdam

(4.2/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Adorning the picturesque streets of the city and providing river transportation, Herengracht winds past the homes of the rich, showcasing centuries-old houses and quaint cafes. Among all of Amsterdam's canals, this one is the finest and most fashionable. See important and historic sites, such as the mayor's residential quarters and a house where Peter the Great stayed. Snap a photo of the seven bridges of the Reguliersgracht, which--if viewed from a correct angle--give the impression of a tunnel. Look for the oldest residential house in the city--a small 1590 home with a stepped gable, overlooking the water. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Amsterdam holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Herengracht and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Walking through Amsterdam we came across this beautiful canal. Several museums and shops and restaurants ... And beautiful old buildings. So don't forget to also look up ...

  • A stunning canal and in my opinion one of the prettiest in Amsterdam with some beautiful buildings. We stayed on here last year at the Hotel Ambassade and walked it quite a few times.
  • It is one of the main canals in Amsterdam. It is beautiful to explore it in its entire length, either by water or on foot. We went in the summer and enjoy it to the full.

  • Very good food in a very busy restaurant. We didn't have a reservation but were greeted warmly by the staff. Drinks came immediately we were told that food would take 40-mins, fine. So we ordered bread with lovely dipping sauce, ordered more drinks and food arrived. Why go to a central restaurant and expect a fine dining service (in response to 1-star review!) We knew what to expect when we walked in, great atmosphere, smiling staff. I didn't expect the amazing steak #mybad. 2nd visit booked
  • This is the second time I have eaten here, food was delicious, staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very chilled and welcoming. Would happily go again, despite being in a high tourist area they haven't just gone for easy, make a buck meals. The starter taster option is a must!
  • We disregarded the negative reviews because the menu looked good and lots of people were sitting outside. Plus we both work in the industry and know to take online reviews with a grain of salt. We were intentionally made to feel unwelcome. The worst restaurant service I've received (even with adjusted expectations).
  • Pricey beer but nice environment
  • Located next to the canal. This will be your small break from the crowded Amsterdam! Friendly staff.
