Begijnhof, Amsterdam
(4.3/5 based on 2,800+ reviews on the web)
One of the city's oldest enclosed courtyards, Begijnhof is surrounded by several historical buildings. This inner courtyard dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the Singel canal. View the characteristically Dutch-Gothic wooden homes of this medieval square, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, which was built in the Middle Ages. See the old courtyard gate, built in 1574, as well as the 19th-century gatehouse. If you walk along the southern edge of the courtyard, you can more closely see the features of the 15th-century English Church with its original medieval tower. • Beautiful, small corner of tranquility in this hectic city. The small church is not always open. Visitors do not always respect the silence that is requested.

  • A short walk from the flower market, in a little square that says nothing, there is a wooden door that leads within this particular yard. Something characteristic, whilst showing Board free to appreciate more the city.

  • Very nice little piece of Amsterdam with a great history. If you asked is there are no tourists and feel the rest while you're in the busy centre of Amsterdam.

  • Cute location, but not as interactive as I would have expected. Granted, there are people living here and I respect giving them space. I do wish there were more informational plaques around the area. I did a lot of my research online before visiting. It is worth a visit if you love history and want to see a unique, historical party of Amsterdam, but it won't take very long, maybe 5-10 minutes at the most.
  • Overhyped but pretty, hardly a 'hidden' gem was v busy. Lovely Chapel though
  • A quiet space, right in the city of Amsterdam. Make sure you read about this place when you're there, it's quite an interesting history the place got.
  • Nice place, it's very calm and silent. Beautiful park. A must see in Amsterdam
  • A place so quiet you can hear the birds sing
