Begijnhof, Amsterdam

Inspirock Rating:
4.3/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web
One of the city's oldest enclosed courtyards, Begijnhof is surrounded by several historical buildings. This inner courtyard dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the Singel canal. View the characteristically Dutch-Gothic wooden homes of this medieval square, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, which was built in the Middle Ages. See the old courtyard gate, built in 1574, as well as the 19th-century gatehouse. If you walk along the southern edge of the courtyard, you can more closely see the features of the 15th-century English Church with its original medieval tower. • Curious site. Haven of peace in the Centre of the city. Protestant Church against hidden Catholic.

  • A great tranquil place to visit. A getaway from the busy streets of Amsterdam. It's all around beautiful. Make sure you leave your bike outside.
  • If you want to find out about the history of Amsterdam. BEGIJNHOF should be on your list to visit. The BEGIJNHOF has two chapels worth visiting.
  • Very quiet and lovely courtyard in the middle of busy Amsterdam. A great place for a little meditation.
  • Really fun to take visitors to the Begijnhof since it's a neat place to see. The visit becomes much more meaningful if you know some historical context and realize it's one of the few public green areas in the city.
