Begijnhof, Amsterdam

Historic Walking Area · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
One of the city's oldest enclosed courtyards, Begijnhof is surrounded by several historical buildings. This inner courtyard dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the Singel canal. View the characteristically Dutch-Gothic wooden homes of this medieval square, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, Het Houten Huis, which was built in the Middle Ages. See the old courtyard gate, built in 1574, as well as the 19th-century gatehouse. If you walk along the southern edge of the courtyard, you can more closely see the features of the 15th-century English Church with its original medieval tower. • Begijnenhof is good to visit when wandering through Amsterdam. It is hidden in the center of the capital. Its an interesting piece of history and the houses are just beautiful. Typically dutch. You...  more »
  • The residents want privacy, so now you can't walk all of the sidewalks, but it's still a special little neighborhood with 2 very old buildings. Free to walk in. If you want a religious souvenir (like....  more »
  • Peaceful serene Square hidden just off the main shopping street. A beautiful photogenic collection of typical Amsterdam homes, a real mixture around a green rather than up against a canal.  more »

  • Even though we’ve actually stumbled upon this place by accident while riding our bikes, I have to recommend visiting. It’s a super cool looking place with lot of history behind it.
  • So much history in this little space, was a privilege to visit alone in my own thoughts though it was a bit too noisy with too many tour groups. Quiet, non-guided visits would be better. 😊
  • Very peaceful and such a surprise to find such a place so near the hustle and bustle of a city. It really made me think about the women that had lived there and all the history that must have taken place under our feet. A quiet calm square just off one of the busiest parts of Amsterdam. This small historic square is timeless and very beautiful. Well worth a visit.
  • Not easy to find but stunningly beautiful. There are 2 churches and lots of houses. A green square in the middle plus lots of lovely flowers. The only downside is it was packed with tourists. Fantastic photo opportunities. Would highly recommend.
  • Amazing enclave in the middle of Amsterdam with some fantastic history. A must. Only takes a few minutes (or however long you wish to speo) but well worth a visit
