Experience wildlife at ARTIS, which supports an aquarium, planetarium, arboretum, and the country's oldest zoo. The zoo was founded in 1838 and holds 27 historic buildings that are wonderful examples of 19th-century architecture. The park's name is short for "natura artis magistra," (nature is the teacher of art and science). Learn about art and science through exhibits with more than 900 species of animals and 200 species of trees. Watch giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and more, along with marine life, at the on-site aquarium. • This a great zoo and it's a really good size considering it's a city zoo. The lion enclosure looked small for the lion but the other animals all looks healthy and had good size habitats. There are par...  more »
  • I busted the zoo on a cold day last week. It was not crowded. I have seen some animals that I have either missed at other zoos or have never seen before. Also being a historic zoo makes it especially ...  more »
  • I haven’t been to a zoo in many years and thought why not! The zoo is very easy to get to and the tram stops are approx 5mins away. The zoo is so clean and tidy & there are plenty of animals to see. I...  more »

  • This zoo is amazing! My group was myself, a lady my age, and her young daughter. We all found ARTIS to be a wonderful place, and we each found exhibits of animals we liked. There are panthers, beavers, vultures, sea lions, penguins, capybaras, penguins...it’s the best zoo I’ve ever seen! The animals appear content and some were even curious about their human guests, so I feel a great appreciation for the work and love that went into making ARTIS a reality! Keep up the good work! I know a happy elephant family when I see one! Those prairie dogs are a hoot!
  • The zoo is amazing... Loved the layout and traditional feel. Animals so close and in some cases walking around you! The aquarium is great and so well laid out... So many highlights and no negatives.... Fantastic day!
  • It is a fantastic zoo with lots of animals to see in my haste the elephants and their giraffes are the best ones on show. I also have a reptile as well we can see all different snakes and lizards and Iguanas which is very cool apart from the fact I don't like snakes :-) we went early in the morning about 9:30 as the weather was extremely hot and we wanted to see all the animals before they got too hot it wasn't very busy but two walls meet day it's got busy with school kids on school trips having a good time. We booked our tickets through their official website as it was cheaper it was easy to do we just showed our phone to the lady on the gate who scanned our tickets
  • Love the jungle house, if you're lucky you can pose with the sloth. The coffee is the best I had in Amsterdam, oddly enough. The price is a little steep for a tiny cup, but it was much needed. The petting zoo needs more goats but to me everywhere is better with more goats. Please put bottle openers in the gift shop, we needed one and we wanted to support the zoo.
  • This zoo has a lot of animals ! That may be obvious but when ever we took a corner we discovered something new. We recently visited Berlin zoo, and I think this is a better place. More to see and it's a bit more spacious. The "monkey house" and butterfly house is really worth the visit. You get to walk among the animals with the butterflies circling around you. Or you have to be mindful not to step on an iguana. Would recommend this place.
