Flea Market Shopping
Buy fruits, vegetables, sweets, and clothes at Albert Cuyp Markt, the largest street market in the capital city. Following a tradition since 1904, vendors in 300 stalls sell a wide range of products bursting with colors and smells. You can get anything from fish and cameras to makeup and spices. In addition, the prices are usually lower than at regular shops. Look for typical products from Africa and the Middle East, and quench your thirst at some of the numerous ethnic cafes and bars that surround the market. • We visited the market on our last day in Amsterdam, around 11:00 am. There weren't very many people there, which was good (not too crowded) and bad (felt sort of dull). We enjoyed an extra large stroo...  more »

  • Came here on a Wednesday around 2:30, not too crowded which is good. We started the visit with some plain waffles and stroopwafels. They are quite sweet so a coffee to go with them is highly recommended. We got some lovely Gouda cheese and vegetables from the organic market section which happens to be on only during Wednesday's. There are fish mongers, clothing stalls, salami delis, bakeries and other miscellaneous shops. It's not as expansive as Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne but it's got the basics. Nice for fresh produce and a short walk on a sunny day as it is not undercover. People are nice here despite the fact they don't necessarily speak good English.
  • Nice large market here. Lots of different stalls and many different food options, some traditional. A lot of the non-food stalls sell touristy junk but that may interest you. The vendors are nice and all speak perfect english.
  • A good mix of both local and tourist stalls, most of them are reasonable price wise. There are also some nice food stalls and good cafés. I love this market and visit every time I am in Amsterdam.
  • I used to see this as a 5 star place to visit, but it has become way to touristy, to much useless stuff, not enough market stuff, if you get what i mean. Still it is a joy to stroll around with fair weather, and enjoy the atmosphere that is still left over. The side streets are jam packed with Yuppie places, just so you know..
  • Must see stop on your Amsterdam trip. Pickled herring is a must. Great Belgian style waffles and the classic Dutch ones too. Variety of all kinds of stuff to buy along with souvenirs.
