Kaasmarkt Alkmaar, Alkmaar

(3.9/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Stop by the Alkmaar's Waagplein square to indulge in the tastes and traditions of the famous Kaasmarkt Alkmaar. The Alkmaar region is renowned for its cheese, and the makers have been selling their product in the city for at least 400 years. After the bell opens the market, the whole square erupts with activity. See how the experts inspect the cheese, witness the frantic haggling, admire the special walk of the carriers who haul huge loads of cheese on barrows suspended from their shoulders, and don't miss the chance to do some tasting and bargaining yourself. To improve your understanding of the market activities, check out the presentations, available in various languages. The market is in the center of the city and is easily accessible by car or public transportation from other cities. • If you are visiting, the Friday cheese market Alkmaar absolutely. It is always a buzz of interest in this happening that shows how the delivery, and transportation of the cheese for many years. In addition, it is always very pleasant on and around the waagplein, know for the cheese market is held. Weather is a determining factor for fun.

  • Of course, something that make a once in a lifetime. The Dutch character is quite different from ours, and not pose this activity as well as others towards tourists, so for my taste they make it quite boring and only speak in Dutch, without counting anything in English, or tell you the history of the market, etc. Despite that, it is super interesting to see, and aqneu not explain you it, then you see how it works. They are very punctual, but more than 3 hours, so estate a while and then it goes through the city that deserves worth hard. Back at the end of the show that you can get to the scale of the cheese and you weigh as if you were one, giving you a certificate for one euro.

  • If you are living in the netherlands and want to see the cheese market, please stay home. If you are from somewhere in the europe it is probably lovely to see but after 15 minutes you've seen enough.
  • Historical peak in the distribution of cheese in history. Very nice to visit.
  • Fun weekly display of how the old market used to work. VERY CROWDED in summer so get there before 10am. Could not hear the commentary from opposite side to weighing area and could not get close enough anywhere else. Excellent view from Cheese Museum above.
  • Have to go there on market days (friday mornings during summer) to enjoy the actual cheese market. We managed to be at the best place, at the best time as they started doing cheese tasting near the end of the market.
  • Toerist event. If you happen to be in Alkmaar and like cheese... a must-go to
