Landmark
Phu Phra Bat is a historical park in Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province, Thailand. The park's distinguishing feature is its unusual rock formations around which religious shrines have been constructed. Some formations also feature prehistoric rock paintings. The park was established by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand in 1991.GeographyPhu Phra Bat is located in the western zone of the Phu Phan Mountains between Udon Thani and Nong Khai, at a distance of about from each city. The park's area is 1200acre and is entirely within the Phu Phra Bat Buabok Forest Park.Rock formationsThe unusual rock formations in the park include spires, massive boulders and balanced rocks and form the backdrop for the prehistoric art and religious shrines created there. The geological origins of these rocks are thought to be from under-sea erosion that occurred fifteen million years ago.Prehistoric artPrehistoric art paintings on the rocks can best be seen where some rocks have formed a natural shelter. Others have faded considerably. The formations named Tham Wua and Tham Khon are particularly good examples; in the former oxen are depicted, the latter has human figures. The park's rock paintings are believed to date from 6,000 years ago.MythologyPhu Phra Bat's rock formations are the setting for a local legend about a king, his daughter and her suitor. The park's most striking rock formation, Hor Nang Usa, is where the overprotective king forced his beautiful daughter to live. Despite her confinement, she was able to get a message out to her suitor prince and the two were married in defiance of her father.

  • Certainly not going to be the reason you came to Udon Thani, but is a nice park with lots of interesting rock formations. The one draw back is the fact that it's something like 80km from Udon. I only ...  more »
  • This place is so beautiful and is worth a visit. It is about 60kms out of udon 100 Bart to get in. It gets hot so you need to take water with you all get there before you go walking.  more »
  • Millions of years of soil erosion have left oddly shaped rocks and rocks placed precariously atop of rock pillars. What was most astonishing to me was the formation looking exactly like a well albeit ...  more »

  • Took a guided tour (just tip the helpful staff member ) and learned a little of the history of this place on a 2 hour walking tour. Prehistorically part of the sea bed which is evident in the exposed strata. Later an important religious site as Buddhism came to Thailand from India 1,000+ years ago. Worth a visit to see the unusual rock formations
  • Route can divide into 3 according to your stamina. If you are weak, go for sight with number 1 till 10 and 18. A little bit of extra stamina need (up to the top of the park) for 1 till 18. If you want to see the whole park area, make sure you have min 3hour budget for this trip, tough and have you meals before started. Route with no 19 till 21 and 22 to 23 are not recommend, first one have to walk nearly 4km with uphill without much to see, and the sight itself difficult to judge worth or not. 22-23 not so 'natural'. The stall at parking area provide hot cook food and cheap.
  • Awesome rock formations....massive slabs resting on slender supports; pretty rocky terrain with a trail that takes you to all the formations plus a viewpoint....there are some ancient paintings on some of those rocks, if that is of some interest; getting here is not easy....I came here by rental scooter from nong khai, a 70 km ride....highway and rural roads, assisted with gps navigation.
  • Lonely place Unless you like old history don't waste the time going there
  • I went to here by rent a car from Udon airport. It took 1 and half hour ( 60km). We could see picture on the rocks. Museum officer and park officer gave us kindness . You can get the map at museum.
