Wat Maha That, Sukhothai

4.8
#2 of 18 in Sightseeing in Sukhothai
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Stroll through the impressive ruins of Wat Maha That, at one time an important royal monastery and today a World Heritage Site. Erected around 1374 CE, the complex contained enshrined relics of Buddha and was strategically situated close to the Grand Palace. It served as the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of the City Dwelling sect for many years. Today, significant remnants of the imposing monastery still stand, including brick edifices and stone sculptures, all surrounded by verdant lawns. Put Wat Maha That at the forefront of your travel plans using our Sukhothai trip itinerary maker.

  • The largest and the best preserved, beautiful day and night. Very nice bike ride but careful to stay to the left and to the dogs. Provide water bottle because enough limited means to buy

  • Wat Mahathat is the largest temple in the historical park and the park one must visit! You'll find big depicted Buddha statues and even large temples. I recommend you come here early in the morning, then it may be a little too much people at the site.

Where to stay in Sukhothai

Sukhothai tourism has been growing for decades, meaning you can now find many places to stay around town, even on a budget. Most accommodations are in New Sukhothai, which lies 12 km (7.45 mi) from the historical park, but lacks many interesting sights of its own. However, good transport connections between the two cities make it easy to explore the historical city on a day trip. If you have a bit more in your budget, save yourself some traveling time by staying near the old city. Do your homework before you book, though--some of the older hotels have a reputation for being run-down and not particularly clean.
