Wat Maha That, Sukhothai

4.8
#2 of 18 in Historic Sites in Sukhothai
Stroll through the impressive ruins of Wat Maha That, at one time an important royal monastery and today a World Heritage Site. Erected around 1374 CE, the complex contained enshrined relics of Buddha and was strategically situated close to the Grand Palace. It served as the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of the City Dwelling sect for many years. Today, significant remnants of the imposing monastery still stand, including brick edifices and stone sculptures, all surrounded by verdant lawns. • Ancient place for historical remembrance. No regrets visiting.
  • One of the amazing places in Thailand . If u visit you need to see sukhotai old capital .
  • The structure is in an open environment, but the local still come in with offering.
  • The main Sukhothai temple. Amazing and huge. Inside the historical park with 100 baht entry fee plus 10 baht entry fee for bicycle.
  • Best part of the Historical Park. Take some nice photograph with the temple complex and its reflection on the grand pond. Have a walk and discover its fine architect and detailed arts.

Where to stay in Sukhothai

Sukhothai tourism has been growing for decades, meaning you can now find many places to stay around town, even on a budget. Most accommodations are in New Sukhothai, which lies 12 km (7.45 mi) from the historical park, but lacks many interesting sights of its own. However, good transport connections between the two cities make it easy to explore the historical city on a day trip. If you have a bit more in your budget, save yourself some traveling time by staying near the old city. Do your homework before you book, though--some of the older hotels have a reputation for being run-down and not particularly clean.
