Si Satchanalai Historical Park, Sukhothai

4.7
#2 of 6 in Parks in Sukhothai Province
Visit the cradle of Thai civilization at Si Satchanalai Historical Park, a World Heritage Site featuring the ruins of the former city of Si Satchanalai. The ancient city was the second city in the Sukhothai Kingdom, and the residence of the crown prince in the 13th and 14th century. Today the site documents early Thai architecture, sculpture, and art. Wander the grounds to see ancient Buddha figures, palace buildings, and ruined temples, all in a setting of deep green trees, bushes, and lawns. You can tour the ruins on foot, by bike, or take a leisurely tram ride. Si Satchanalai Historical Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Sukhothai Edition.

  • This place is magical. More so than Sukhothai, in my view. If only because, at least in the morning, you’ll have it all to yourself! The hills too are amazing.
  • Worth getting a driver to come up to this UNESCO site. I can walk quite long distances but would recommend getting a bike onsite or otherwise using a shuttle to get around the area. Certainly recommend this place!
  • May be a bit out of the way but its still reachable. More ancient khmer architecture than thai.. Less polish than its cousin sukhothai park but definitely have a more ancient feel..
  • Very nice park with few tourists and well maintained ruins. Also there was a large colony of crane like birds in the South West part off the park
  • A must see together with Sukhothai and Kampaen Phet historical park. Don't forget to visit Wat phra si rattana mahatat which is 3km away from the park.

Where to stay in Sukhothai

Sukhothai tourism has been growing for decades, meaning you can now find many places to stay around town, even on a budget. Most accommodations are in New Sukhothai, which lies 12 km (7.45 mi) from the historical park, but lacks many interesting sights of its own. However, good transport connections between the two cities make it easy to explore the historical city on a day trip. If you have a bit more in your budget, save yourself some traveling time by staying near the old city. Do your homework before you book, though--some of the older hotels have a reputation for being run-down and not particularly clean.
